There are a variety of Web Sites that offer help with finding in-between jobs, with planning to make a career move, with applying to graduate school, with preparing resumes, with positing resumes and delivering them to places with jobs to offer. Many companies with Web Sites offer job information on their home pages. Look for it. Here are a few sites that have been helpful to some. If you find a site you think is wonderful, e-mail me. I'll include it.

Reach Out to Fellow Students and the Community

The university is a resource to the entire community. Help us reach out to others. Share this site and these links with other students, should they mention a life after college. And share them with friends and family in the community. Maybe there's a kid down the block whose mom knows your mom. He doesn't have a computer, but your mom tells you that he's searching for answers about college and jobs. Talk to him. Use our site to download information that might help him, and share it with him. His mom will love you, your mom will love you, and it is good. That's how we capture the risky promises of technology, by spreading its benefits to all, so that we don't create dysfunction right along with all our new splendiferous technological stuff.

Want to think about some of that in more detail? Try reading Sandra Harding's "Gendered Ways of Knowing and the "Epistemology Crisis" of the West"," in Knowledge, Difference, and Power, Goldberger et al., Basic Books, 1996. Harding speaks of the other side of the coin in the creation of scientific and technological knowledge in the West. With each advance in knowledge we must decide who shall have access to the new, and who shall continue with the old and now obsolete. Computer access to links tht might help you plan the interstitial stages of your career and make your next move is one such technology. Some of us are afforded access, and some or not. Some are left to the obsolescence and the handicap of the old communication in all its imperfections of not being able to reach many of us. Your sharing your access to Dear Habermas and the Web with someone who has no such access is one way to avoid the terrible inequalities of access that come built into new technology.
