Consider that you might not think about adding a question on age until you begin to analyze your data and discover that you want to compare people in their 40's to people of retirement age. If you failed to ask for age in your recording of socioeconomic data, you can't do that analysis. And by the time you're doing the analysis, it's too late to go back and get age data from your subjects.
