The right to a public trial is an essential right:"The Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution states that "In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed." Every state constitution carries a similar guarantee to the right to jury trial in criminal cases."From Right of the Accused to Trial by Jury. Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago.
