Dear Jeanne,I recently read Hal Pepinsky’s “Peacemaking Primer”, and I feel that it can be related to what’s going on right now in our country. In Pepinsky’s article he talks about how violence is only a quick fix for a dispute, and how peacemaking is a long term resolution that eventually brings opposing side to some type of agreement. I really liked Pepinsky’s article because he brought up a lot of valid points that I think our president and Ben Laden should consider. For instance when he discusses Social control and the two different ways of achieving it. First he tells how “peacemaking” is a form of self-control because if establishes a sense of trust and social safety. This method makes up a happier society and a sense of security. Pepinsky also tells how “warmaking” is another form of social control that gives our society a sense of insecurity and danger. This form makes up a society of people distrusting one another and the need to defend themselves through violent acts. Like pepinsky makes it clear in his article, I agree that the only way we can have a productive resolution to this problem is to look within ourselves first and then try to make steps toward peacemaking.
