Notice particularly the illustration by Marc Phares: . The DNA-like chain is made up of the bar codes used to price items on the shelves. When the bar code is fed into the cashier's computer electronically that data goes into a database that is carefully guarded by the store. It is true that the data so gathered could help the store predict your purchases and stock items more effectively. But it is also true that those data can be used for far more nefarious purposes, some of which violate our basic liberties.
