Finley says that the demographics of DES are unusual. Even though it was cheap to produce, the pharmaceutical companies did not sell it cheaply. It was promoted primarily through private doctors and in women's magazines, ones that were likely to include an interest in "high-level prenatal care. DES was "rarely [used] in clinics or public hospitals serving poor women." See p. 67.
