Hidden Control and VictimizationThis quiz is taken from the review of Lessig's Code. Note particularly the section on "How Anarchy Works." Then review the "Hostile TakeOver of Hampton Hampster." Then think about how that hostile takeover was accomplished.1. Why do we speak of the Hampster Dance takeover as hidden control? Would you have even known about the takeover if you did not have this special knowledge?Answer: We speak of the takeover as hidden control because it occurred in private negotiations behind closed doors, and appeared on the site itself only as a vacation announcement. No, we would not have known about the abduction if we had not received direct e-mail from Hampton Hampster.2. Why did we provide this as an example of the kind of victimization that goes with today's electronic world?
Answer: This is a new kind of victimization because it depends on privately negotiated dealings in which others are using private information about us. The people behind NuttySites.com are hiding behind that name, and then gain access when we go to that URL to see hampsterdance. At that time they may gain access to our computer's domain identification. This is no longer the random sale of faulty drugs to any customer willing to buy them. This is now the private taking of information, and the fraudulent drawing of us to their sight by false pretenses.3.

Figurine by Rudiger Appel. Notice that you can see three effects in the animation. Either the Variation on the Kandinsky figurine appears to turn in a clockwise direction, or in a counterclockwise direction, or it appears to open and close. Can you see all three effects? Try. Fascinated? Link to Appel's site and then link to the background he provides. Scroll down until you find a link to background.
Chantessy's Page Chantessy's Mardi Gras Alphabet was originally used on this page. We changed it because it was too distracting as eye candy. Chantessy was the first contributor to our Kids' Site when we began Dear Habermas. Visit her page. Check out the sliders puzzles on her fun page. Or check out her candy box and send a friend a posty. Non-violent ways to respond to structural violence in the academy! It's great fun.
