These short statements of our joint perceptions of your learning are growing from our review of the records and our experiences in class. In a cooperative learning world, in which our objective is to help each other gain critical insights, what should matter, instead of "grades" is such a report. Learning that I can tell you I have seen, either directly or through some of your work, and that you can confirm. That is learning accountability.

As we gain skill at this, a paragraph of recommendation should be your goal for the end of each course, each semester. If you were to realize that this is how I will end the course, and you were to want the best possible recommendation of your learning, we could interactively check our respective records all semester, and the recommendations could be detailed and helpful to all who want to know about your learning. Visit Letters of Recommendation for clues on how to do this.

The first ROL period is from Week 1 through Week 4 (September 4-27, 2002). The second ROL period is from Week 5 through Week 9 (September 29-November 1, 2002). And, the third and final ROL period is from Week 10 through Week 14 (November 3-December 6, 2002). The criteria for grading were the 5Cs -- communication, cooperation, consistency, competency, and creativity in conjunction with your latest grade form that I have on file. Also considered is Bloom and Krathwohl's taxonomy of learning: latent learning, recognition, recall, application, analysis, evaluation and synthesis.

For example, a student assesses ROL at an "A" and my response is "way overrated" (meaning that my assessment is 3 grades lower than the student's assessment), which would be a grade of "B".

Student 461 - Doing pretty well in class. Keeping up with reading assignments and emails as well as researching topic. Have missed a few classes due to illness. 1st rol="Borderline A-/A" [10/3] Consistent with emails, journal and readings. Keeping up with research. Did website reivew. Student 553 - Performance has not been up to par. Have been thinking about a project. Understands class discussions. 1st rol="B-" [10/1] Communication and creativity were not as good as they should have been. But participates on a daily basis especially in group discussions. 2nd rol="Borderline B-/B" [11/1] Worked on questions and always participated in group discussions and questions. Student 708 - Completed 5Cs by emailing questions and comments on readings and class discussions. Took notes on all readings. Went to all classes. 1st rol="B+" [10/3] Did all 5Cs. Have done this by emailing, reading and going to class. 2nd rol="Borderline B+/A-" [11/1] Emailed on comments, questions, and rsearch. Student 833 - Done all the required work. Have communicated numerous times with professor. Done a lot of work outside of class on own including meeting with study group. Setting up an interview. 1st rol="Borderline B/B+" [10/1] Have done all that is required as well as participated and spoke out in most all classes. Emailed weekly and began creative measure. Improved competence. 2nd rol="Borderline B-/B" [11/1] Cooperation was less than normal however finished creative measures and discussed with professor. 3rd rol="D+" [12/18] Course grade="C+"

Student 878 - Understands material and professor's approach. Needs to start working on creativity. 1st rol="Borderline B-/B" [10/1] Have been participating in the site visits and working on creative measures (what questions should ask). Still need to do debriefings on site visits. 2nd rol="B" [11/1] Did four debriefings. Went to the Milwaukee DA lecture. Watched "Thug Life". Could have done better dialoguing about debriefings. Student 997 - Coming to class everyday. Have not been able to communicate with professor. Competence, that is a little shaky. Creativity, still thinking about what to do. 1st rol="C-" [12/13] Despite some communcation/creative measures, rol started off to a bad start. Some improvement. 2nd rol="C" [11/1] Rough semester. Student 1051 - Came to class prepared. Attended everyday. Selected a research topic and began emailing findings. Competence and cooperation needs some improvement. 1st rol="B+" [10/1] Consistency and competence needs improvment. Creative measures progressing and new topics are bieng introduced. 2nd rol="B-" [11/7] Creative measures have been pretty consistent and well researched. Student 1284 - Learned to related policy and practice. Read Fellman. Tried to analyze issues of competition. Discussions on Randall Kennedy. 1st rol="B" [10/8] Getting further into reading Kennedy. Fellman is still fuzzy. Professor helped by telling to re-read his thesis. Group discussions help. Connecting this course with other criminal justice classes. 2nd rol="Borderline B-/B" [11/1] Active in class and with learning. Communicates learning and thoughts to professor regularly. Relaying active dialogue from readings. Emails comments of class. Can interpret and apply authors' thesis. Lots of creative measures. 3rd rol="Borderline B/B+" [12/12] Course grade="B+" [12/29]

Student 1771 - Don't feel learned a lot the first four weeks because a review. Have only scratched the surface of the readings in Kennedy. 1st rol="Borderline B-/B" [10/1] Checked out a book from other readings that were recommended. Need to strengthen communication. 2nd rol="Borderline C+/C" [11/7] Did not do well in the communication area. Learned some interesting facts from article read for creative measues. 3rd rol="Borderline C/C-" [12/12] Course grade="C+" [12/16]

Student 1797 - Learned how this class works. Need to work on some things, especially creativity, communication and cooperation. 1st rol="C-" [11/15] Need to work on communication and cooperation. Cooperation has been difficult because missed a lot of class. 2nd rol="D+" [12/16] Some improvements. Starting to understand texts more. Meeting with professor. Understands how dialogue through email helps to apply Kennedy and Fellman to topics of interest. 3rd rol="Borderline C-/D+" [12/16] Course grade="C-" [12/16]

Student 1798 - Not maintained consistency as far as coming to class, taking notes, participating in class discussions and keeping a journal, have show understanding of subjects discussing. Only problem is that there are so many topics that are extremely interesting. Hard time narrowing down one thing to research. 1st rol="A" [10/1] Continues to be one of the strongest class participants during class discussions. Shows preparedness in class through participation. Continues to email professor regarding research topics and lecture comments on a regular basis. 2nd rol="A" [11/1] Consistent with class participation and preparedness. Went above and beyond what is necessary. Although have missed more classes than usual, have made up for when in class. 3rd rol="A" [12/12] Course grade="A" [12/18]

Student 2071 - Been devoting a lot of time to creative scholarship. Been to class everyday except when ill. Doing assignments and readings. 1st rol="B+" [10/1] Did a lot of creativity on three different toics. Went to a site visit. Started reading a book, not required. shared knowledge and silence during class discussions. [2nd rol="Borderline B+/A-" [11/8] Came to class a lot but not everyday. Came prepared. Student 2376 - Had a late start on creative measures and need to email more. 1st rol="Borderline B/B+" [10/1] Need to do a little more for creative measures. 2nd rol="Borderline B-/B" [11/6] This five week span, was behind on emaiiing professor and doing creative measures. 3rd rol="B-" [12/12] Course grade="B" [12/16]

Student 2382 - Been to class everyday. Participated in group and class discussions everyday. Also dialogued with professor on class discussions and research topic. 1st rol="Borderline B-/B" [10/1] Have been in class everyday and have participated in groups and class discussions almost every class. Have been dialoguing back and forth with professor. 2nd rol="B" [11/1] Have been in class everyday. Participated in every single group discussion as well as a lot of class discussions. Researched "driving while black." 3rd rol="B-" [12/16] Course grade="B" [12/16]

Student 2712 - Maintained consistent communication and application of class discussions and readings in small groups and through "outside" readings. Missed last week. 1st rol="Borderline C+/B-" [10/11] Maintained creativity and consistency measures. Continued email dialogues on creative topics, readings, and class discussions in relation to the readings. 2nd rol="B+" [11/1] Maintained competence in creative measures, communication and in relating films and outside research to class and text materials. But still struggled with cooperation. 3rd rol="Borderline B+/B" [12/12] Course grade="B" [12/16]

Student 2846 - Through interacting in class discussions, emailing, creative measures and completing assignments - completing 5Cs. 1st rol="A -" [10/1] Sharing knowledge, current events and engaging in creative measures with class and professor. 2nd rol="Borderline B+/B" [11/1] Worked on creative measures and dialoguing as well as attending ASC meetings. Class participation and competence of materials. 3rd rol="B+/B" [12/13] Course grade="B+" [12/18]

Student 2882 - Communicated about class. Kept up with journal. Did some creativity. Did not communicate the last week. 1st rol="B-" [10/81] Kept up with journal. Only absent once. Communicated learning through emailing professor. Went on one field trip. Actively participated in groups. 2nd rol="Borderline B-/B" [11/1] Did a couple of creative measures. Participated in class discussions and with emails. Participated in groups when answered questions. 3rd rol="B" [12/12] Course grade="B" [12/18]

Student 3230 - Trying very hard to not only meet expectations of class but to exceed them as well. [rol should focus on 5Cs more specifically] 1st rol="Borderline A-/A" [10/1] Done all (and more) than suppose to. Student 3270 - Have not gotten into the creativity. Still reading Fellman and Kennedy. Researched various things relating to videos watched in class. Student 4283 - Communicating in class as much as possible. Been doing all the readings and assignments. Cooperation and creativity needs improvement. Have a lot of ideas for creativity. Student 4308 - Trying to adapt to new way of doing things. Keeping up and adjusting. Did everything on grade form except for field trips. 1st rol="B+" [10/5] Improved a lot, now knowing waht is expected from professor. Doing well in class. Participating in discussions in groups and also (sometimes) as a class. Keeping up with readings. Attended site visits. 2nd rol="B" [11/1] Done good in all 5Cs; maybe if anything lacked a little in research but other than have been emailing professor. Done all the homework. Participated in class. 3rd rol="Borderline B-/B" [12/12] Course grade="B" [12/16]

Student 4587 - Done what was supposed to and excelled in filling the 5Cs. Have communicated every day with professor and other students. 1st rol="Borderline B+/A-" [10/4] Succeeded in fulfilling the five Cs and have been working on creative measures. Comes to class prepared every time and always ready for group discussions. 2nd rol="Borderline B+/A-" [11/1] Succeeded in filling in the five Cs. Had active dialogue with professor on site debriefings and web evaluations. 3rd rol="A-" [12/13] Course grade="A-" [12/16]

Student 4732 - Read assigned readings. Participated in online discussion with professor. Added to group discussions. Lacking in creativity. 1st rol="B" [10/1] Participates in group discussions and activities as much as possible. Habe been communicating with professor about Fellman and Kennedy's theories. Researching my topic about community policing. 2nd rol="Borderline B-/C+" [11/6] Worked hard this rol period in creative measures category. Emailed professor a couple of times a week and discussed articles found. 3rd rol="B" [12/13] Course grade="B" [12/13]

Student 4894 - Emailed thoughts of class everyday. Emailed research and talked in group discussions. Consistently comes to class, writes in journal and email professor. Researching topic. 1st rol="A-" [10/1] Emailed thoughts of class every day. Emailed research and did debriefing. Talked in small group discussions. Consistently comes to class. Did journal and emailed. 2nd rol="Borderline A-/B+" [11/1] Emailed thoughts of class everyday. Talked in small and large group discussions. Did research and debriefings. Consistently came to class. Student 4913 - Really wasn't sure about how this class was but now starting to get the hang of it. 1st rol="Borderline C+/B-" [10/1] Was really sure what creative measures were and did not apply communicating learning to professor but did communicate with group members and other students. Participated in a field trip and group discussions. Consistent with coming to class and emailing professor. 2nd rol="Borderline C+/B-" [11/1] Have tried to communicate as much as can in class. In groups, have spoke up. Been very consistent with readings, journaling, coming to class. Have lacked in creative measure area and not communicating as much with the professor. 3rd rol="C+" [12/13] Course grade="B-" [12/16]

Student 5190 - Prepared for class. Ready to contribute to class discussions. Don't have much creativity. 1st rol="Borderline C+/B-" [10/1] Good consistency with coming to class. Researched two different things on own. Generate discussion in groups. Late 2nd grid form. 2nd rol="Borderline C/C-" [11/15] Kept up three discussions over the time period. Student 5252 - Done radings and found someone in class to discuss with outside of class. Participated in groups. Always prepated. Emails questions and understanding. Decided on a resarch topic. 1st rol="Borderline B-/B"[10/4] Gotten the hang of things. Have done basic classwork as well as gone on two field trips. Conducted an interview. 2nd rol="B" [12/16] Have continued to do everyday work. Also worked really hard on creative measures. Prepared questions for interview even though fell through. 3rd rol="B+" [12/12] Course grade="B" [12/17]

Student 5307 - Consistently attends class. Participateds in class and group discussions. Communicates learning through email and group/class discussions. Creativity through theory, policy, practice. Competency is shown through discussions and ability to assist others. Cooperation through discussing discussion questions and readings. Student 5578 - Working on journal. Needs more creativity and communication. 1st rol="Borderline B-/C+" [10/11] Did the 5Cs. Need to do more emailing and creativity. 2nd rol="Borderline C+/B-" [11/6] Should have emailed more and came to see professor more. 3rd rol="B-" [12/12] Course grade="B-" [12/16]

Student 5612 - Discussion and competency of materials demonstrated. Always ready for class. Certains areas for improvement. 1st rol="Borderline B/B+" [10/4] Extensive journal records and email discussions related to Fellman. 2nd rol="B" [11/1] Based on completion of debriefing as well as email dialgoues throughout journal and relating rior aspects ot Fellman and Kennedy.3rd rol="B" [12/13] Course grade="B" [12/16]

Student 5830 - Creativity, watched tv news and movies, and dictionary usage with journal entries. Emailed concerns and project for competence. Showed up to class prepared. 1st rol="Borderline B/B+" [10/4] Put out a little more but could do better. Project fell through the cracks. 2nd rol="B+" [11/7] Accomplished a lot more than the second; 2 web reviews, 1 debriefing, 2 lecture commentaries and journal comparisons with movies/Fellman's views. Could have turned them in before last week. 3rd rol="Borderline A-/B+" [12/12] Course grade="B+" [12/17]

Student 6122 - Have been working hard on doing things outside of class. Working on research and reviews for internet. Keeping up with journal and emails. Keeping in touch with professor through dialogues. 1st rol="B" [10/1] Have been really working hard these past five week. Habe been keeping up with homework. Been emailing professor. Been keeping busy with creative measures. Collecting newspaper articles. 2nd rol="Borderline A/A-" [11/8] Worked very hard. Have done a lot of creative measures. Kept up with readings, questions, and emailing/dialoguing, journal entries. 3rd rol="Borderline A-/B+" [12/16] Course grade="A-" [12/16]

Student 6301 - Off to good start, researching many things and relating back to class. Carry on dialogue relating class, books and outside activities. 1st rol="A" [10/3] A lot of research. Shows knowledge in class and in emails. Helps others understand material and listens to other opinions. 2nd rol=-"A" [11/12] Comes up with own theories. Relating everyday occurrences to Kennedy and Fellman. Communicates ideas and thought regularly. 3rd rol="A" [12/12] Course Grade="A" [12/12]

Student 6328 - Kept track of everything that we have done in the first 5 weeks. Started a project. 1st rol="Borderline C+/B-" [10/1] Went on field trip. Came to class everyday. Talked in group. Emailed and talked to professor every week. 2nd rol="Borderline B-/B" [11/1] Did pretty good. Researched all the topics told professor was doing. [late] 3rd rol="Borderline C-/C" [12/16] Course grade="C+" [12/16]

Student 7351 - Not focused. Have been doing some things. Talks about issues with friends. Doing just enough. 1st rol="Borderline C-/C" [10/1] Did all things needed to be done. Did more than average. 2nd rol="Borderline B/B+" [11/1] Did things necessary. Came to class to participate in issues discussed. 3rd rol="C-" [12/16] Course grade="C" [12/16]

Student 7421 - Participating in all but one of the 5Cs. 1st rol="Borderline B/B+" [10/1] Picked up slack in the creativity sectoin and stayed consistent with all other categories. 2nd rol="Borderline A-/A" [11/1] Kept up with creative measures and participated in discussions. Communicated well on comments to evaluations and debriefings. 3rd rol="Borderline B+/B" [12/12] Course grade="A-" [12/16]

Student 7428 - The top three Cs on grid form okay but the bottom two Cs not very good. 1st rol="C" [11/6] Read so much in the last couple months. Trying to gain more of an idea of everyone's views. Internet has been bit help. 2nd rol="C" [11/6] 3rd rol=Incomplete [12/12]

Student 7481 - Communicated with professor and others in class. Have many different creative measures. 1st rol="B-" [10/15] Five weeks was a little stressful but kept in contact with professor and talked with others in class. Creative measures slacked but picked them back up. 2nd rol="Borderline C+/B-" [11/4] Worked hard and went to a couple places to visit and did debriefings. Kept an active journal and dialogued with professor. 3rd rol="Borderline B-/B" [12/18] Course grade="B-" [12/18]

Student 7523 - Fairly good communication. Decent cooperation. Good consistency. Increased competence. Decent creativity. 1st rol="B" [10/1] Very good communication. Fairly good creativity. Fairly good competence. Decent consistency and cooperation. 2nd rol="B+" [11/1] Good but not consistent in communication. Decent but not perfect cooperation. Some consistency. Competence has increased. Creativity is new but abundant. 3rd rol="B-" [12/12] Course grade="B" [12/16]

Student 8206 - Keepin gup with journal. Consistent with emails and class attendance. Completed all the Dear Habermas assignments. Done other research. 1st rol="Borderline A-/A"[10/11] Kept up with eamils, journal and assigned readings and the questions due. Participates in class discussions. [10/28] 2nd rol="C+" [11/8] Have been consistent with all work in and out of class. Have done many researches on topics discussed in class. Willing to help and get help from other students. 3rd rol="B-" [12/18] Course grade="B-" [12/24]

Student 8338 - Worked well with most of the 5Cs. Could have gotten better start with creative measures. 1st rol="B+" [10/9] Did a good job relating discussions and other topics to Kennedy and Fellman. Was pretty consistent with communicating with professor. Did a good job keeping up with commentary page. 2nd rol="B+" [11/1] Did an alright joub on 5Cs. Have done better. 3rd rol=B-" [12/12] Course grade="B" [12/18 - grade not interactive and interdependent]

Student 8382 - Able to understand what is race and see what others have to say. Class discussions interesting. 1st rol="Borderline B-/C+" [10/11] Communication in this second set seemed hardest. Did not communicate much learning. Attended site visit. 2nd rol="Borderline C+/B-" [11/1] Last five weeks very interesting. Did a lot of hard things like movies that invoked dialogues with class. [3rd rol should reflect 5Cs instead] 3rd rol="C-/C" [12/13] Course grade="C+" [12/13]

Student 8549 - Did very well this first report. Sure, there is always room for improvement (could talk out in class more). Completed all assignments as well as starting research. Trying to go that extra mile. 1st rol="Borderline B-/B" [10/15] Continued on a good path for the most part. Made more of an effort to talk in groups and in class. Current on the readings but lacks creative measures. 2nd rol="C-/D+" [11/12] Improvement on 3rd rol, more communication, more consistency, more creativity. 3rd rol="C-/C" [12/12] Course grade="C" [12/16]

Student 8832 - Was not really focused. Creativity measures are not there. Some areas productive. 1st rol="Borderline C-/C" [10/1] Has made some improvements since first rol. Cooperation, communication and creative measures have increased. Started to speak up more. Have done much more work. 2nd rol=:"B-" [11/7] Attending class regularly. Consistently emails professor. Student 9187 - [ Emails on various topics. Communicates whereabouts. Talks in class. Participates in groups. For creativity, discussions on learning/teaching module. "Who Moved My Cheese?" Alfie Kohn on gold starts. 1st rol="Borderline B+/B" [10/13] Speaks up in class. Emails on various subjects. Dialogues on creative measures. 2nd rol="B+" [11/24] Spoke on War on Drugs and reacted to documentaries. Debriefed a book read. Attended McCann lecture. Researched several topics. 3rd rol="B" [12/12] Course grade="B+" [12/16]

Student 9537 - Done all the 5Cs consistently. Gotten a good start on creative measures. Keeping a detailed journal. Only missed one class. 1st rol="Borderline B+/B" [10/18] Kept up with all the 5Cs. Have expanded creative measures and apply them when asked. Attended site visit and did debriefing. Have done more than last rol. 2nd rol="Borderline B+/B" [11/24] Continued to follow the 5Cs. Had one bad week. Done all that was asked, plus more. 3rd rol="Borderline B-/B" [12/12] Course grade="B" [12/16]
