Liked Harvest of Empire

Hey Jeanne!!

I enjoyed your discussion yesterday about the book "Harvest of Empire." I just read the excerpt that you put on the site. Aside from what I learned from looking at the discussion questions, I saw several other interesting things. I was never aware of the U.S. imperialism that took place in Puerto Rico and the negative impact that it had on many of the island's poor. I was likewise unaware of the conflicts that the U.S. military had with the Puerto Rican nationalists and the massacre that occurred. And despite all of the history courses that I've taken in my academic lifetime, I never had heard of an all Puerto Rican infantry in World War II. Interesting reading.

Bobby, I'm delighted that you enjoyed the reading. I, too, was amazed at how much of this history I did not know. I hope that Juan Gonzalez is right, that Americans will no longer tolerate such injustice, once they are aware of it.

And I want to congratulate you on your acceptance to two well-respected law schools. I know you'll make a wonderful contribution.

love and peace, jeanne
