Restorative Justice After September 11
Copyright: Jeanne Curran and Susan R. Takata and Individaul Authors, April 2002.
"Fair use" encouraged. This essay is based on the program for the Third Annual Restorative Justice Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in August 2002.The evemts of September 11th brought close to home the concomitants of permitting hate to fester and spread. It matters little who is right and who wrong, if both sides continue to feel they have been disrespected and their validity claims ignored. The United States, because of its relative isolation, has been largely exempt in the past from the consequences of leaving the Other dissatisfied, frustrated, and without any concession of good faith listening. Terrible in many respects, as it was, the attack on the World Trade Center was a wake-up call that we must learn to listen to each other in good faith, in spite of what are often legitimate conflicts.
