Subject: Response to Jeanne's lecture on Race, Black Men and the Law/ and Jaimes's lamentAs I sat in class, I continued to feel the tremendous effects of the devastating life sentence of Black Men from a Black woman's, a Black mother's, a Black wife's and a Black advocate's point of view. I wrote this poem not as back up but just a few of my thoughts expressed in poetry.
Life Sentence of the Black Man
Who can help me in this violent world?
No discourse for Black Males, and little for girls.
Death is familiar and violence reigns,
Many Blacks die, the system's insane.
What options exist in this cancerous state?
Assumptions continue to thrive, the Black man's fate.
Though their voices cry out for justice, for help,
They are forced to accept the cards they were dealt.
Can we change the frustration that acknowledges the end?
The Black Male is immobile and his death is a trend.
Academia preaches education to rise above the lore of their world,
Becoming a part of the system, to avoid the boulders hurled.
How can we forget those who fall through the cracks?
When the system's solution is to keep passing the ax!I know this response is very sad.....................but it's my understanding of what I see and am forced to acknowledge. I feel you Jaime.
