This exercise will permit us to record our own data on an issue of interest to us. In the last few years the Los Angeles area has found itself in gridlock. For those of our students who must come to school from jobs (which are hard won, especially if they have benefits and permit career growth), being on time for classes has become problematic. On the other hand, professors are accustomed to view the serious, good student as one who is "on time," often because that term signifies responsibility, caring about school work, motivation to learn, and a variety of other status characteristics.
First assignment for this exercise:
E-mail me a list of all the adjectives that come to mind for you and your friends with the school related terms "being on time," and "being late." How would you define those terms for measurement? How do others define them?
Second assignment for this exercise:
For purposes of analysis, into what categories should we put students? Serious, highly motivated, not serious, indifferent?????
Third assignment for this exercise:
What adjectives do you perceive teachers as having for these terms?
Fourth assignment for this exercise:
Into what categories would you suggest we place teachers for this analysis?
Traditional, conservative, nice guy, don't care, understanding?????????
I'll put together a preliminary questionnaire this weekend, if you'll get your terms and categories to me.
