"A"December 10, 2001: I am pleased at the amount of learning I see taking place. I will link to submissions and comments as soon as I can finish the reports of learning list.I would like to spend more time with you talking about a paradigm shift. You are very confident in your perspective, and that is good. I just want to see you temper that perspective with a deeper understanding of the opposition. You have considered the law as a power system. I want you to learn to think like a lawyer, with a clear concept of the Other's best arguments, as well as your own.
November 11, 2001: Thanks for sending the e-mail. That means I don't have to write everything up for you. Good kid!
Your comments in comparing Che and Marx are great. Now, for an "A" on that submission you need to reflect back to me that you have understood those conceptual links.
November 1, 2001: I understand about your minimal access to e-mail. But it won't cut it for you to tell me "Yeah, well I read Marx, and he talks about, you know, . . . ." Yes, I know that you are reading. But you're not reading Marx. You're reading Farganis, our text, on Marx. That's what I mean by disciplined reporting. Scrupulous scholarship demands that you accurately identify your sources, whether in writing, or in conversation.
Especially because you have limited access to e-mail, you need to focus on recording specific details. Otherwise, it sounds like BS. And I suggest that one good measure of learning for you would be to learn how to e-mail from the lab. Hello? That would solve our problems.

We're trying to deal with the problem you so accurately identified: Recreating the academic bull sessions of residential colleges To get an "A" what you need to do is to make the learning interactive by reflecting to me that you have followed the discussion and understand the conceptual linking. "Grade needs to be revised"January 7, 2002: Thank you for your patience. I have a paper deadline to meet this week, and have been working at it. I just checked your forwarded e-mail from December 8 and this one. I'm going to need a little time to figure this out, but I can give you some idea of the situation right now.The three concepts and this e-mail seem to be the only ones where you are trying to give me a measure of your learning. This one: I'm glad you worked with a group. That helps. And the other one on the three concepts I'll get to as soon as I complete the paper deadline - but all of the concepts sound like you are reacting to something on the site, and give no indication of anything picked up from the lectures or discussions. I'll respond to that more fully later.
But you had two courses with me, and you do not indicate any learning beyond those three concepts. I did ask for the three concepts most important to you in each class. I think it's reasonable to ask you to show me some measure of learning for each of those classes.
Presence: I know you were present some of the time. I do remember talking to you, but always during class breaks, not in my office where we could have had a little more peace and quiet. You make no mention of a journal. I presume you did keep one as instructed. You need to refer to that to let me know what you learned.
Theory is an important class. We covered a lot of material. You do not give me a sense of how well you have learned any of the theorists. I suggest you go through the Scholarly References for Week 9, and browse through the archived issues on Collaborative Journal. I put up a good deal of material on how to do conceptual linking and how to get a good grade. On Sept. 15 you asked for help with using the site. On October 8, you e-mailed a piece on September 11 with a small group, so I presume you did learn to effectively use the site.
The reason for the C- in theory is my concern that I have no record of what you learned about social theory and theorists. The journal should provide you with enough to assure me of your learning, but you have not alluded to it. Look at the reports of learning. Link to successful measures of learning, and then contact me to fill in these gaps.
Does that help? I will put up more detailed comments soon. jeanne

November 2, 2001
Sherita, thank you for coming in so promptly on Wednesday, was it? I'm sorry I scared you. It's been very tense in the last week, and I'm sure I overreacted. I think a good theoretical explanation of what happened is that you made an intellectual leap in that you assumed that I knew you had been following the material and just wanted to express your reactions to the most recent incidents. I should have connected that. But with 300 students and an asthma attack, I didn't. Intellectual leaps can best be avoided by stating your assumptions, at least briefly. The trouble is that if you don't state them, I may react without knowledge of them. That spells trouble in communication.Nevermind, though. It was a great chance to make that speech for all of those who might have decided to express their reactions without having prepared so thoroughly.
October 29, 2001
Why do I get the feeling you haven't been paying attention? You absolutely need to talk to me. Grades don't just drop off trees. Sherita, The response you wrote here is absolutely unacceptable. You have given no academic support for what you say you believe. You give no indication of having read any of the material on the Middle East and the War, and you give absolutely no indication of understanding theory or transforming discourse or sociology of law.
This is not a game. I am appalled at the lack of interest, motivation and knowledge you exhibit in this message. I think you'd darned well better see me with some outstanding explanations. jeanne October 29, 2001.

Will you serve as Chief Justice?November 2001:We need to talk about how you're going to measure your learning. If you're taking two classes, one of which is theory, you're going to have an awful lot of work to make up, and telling me about the war isn't going to cut it. You need to indicate clearly what you are reading in the texts and the concepts we have learned and discussed in class.

"A"October 2001: Congratulations on your appointment as Co-Director of Dear Habermas for Spring 2001.October 2001: It has been a privilege to work with you throughout the semester. Because we had not met before we had a long way to go. I would like you to know how much I appreciated your approach. You waited, listened, figured out my agenda, and responded to my agenda. I did not discover until Alan Ryave came to tell me, that you wanted to specialize in ethnomusicology. I suppose I could have guessed it. It certainly didn't surprise me when he told me. It just confirmed that we had been on the right track in our sharing of Belgrade's material on American Studies and much of the other theory we've shared.
Very rarely do we encounter people willing to interact deeply and intellectually on issues of mutual interest without trying to distort the agenda to their own purposes. Particularly, very bright students on their way to higher studies, vaguely, and openly. I thank you for that.
Your eagerness to pursue ideas and theory, to expand your horizons by sharing many of my theory lists, and your serious embracing of scholarship are a joy that any teacher would love to share. I would worry about losing you next year, had there not been so many before you who have remained a close part of our community. I had a hard time seeing the conceptual linking in this piece. That's because we were communicating within the private sphere of our connectedness. I just thought the juxtaposition of the "you're wonderful" was terribly inconsistent with the tone of the message, and kept looking for an explanation. I think I was right.
