Theory, Praxis, and Activism
Review and teaching essay by Jeanne Curran and Susan R. Takata
Copyright: Jeanne Curran and Susan R. Takata and Individaul Authors, January 2002.
"Fair use" encouraged. This essay is based on an article by Joy James: Experience, Reflection, Judgment and Action: Teaching Theory, Talking Community, in Radically Speaking: Feminism Reclaimed. Edited by Diane Bell and Renate Klein,Spinifex Press Pty Ltd., Australia, 1996.I am particularly fascinated by the argument Ms. James gives for the requirement that activism is an integral part of theory-making, and that because of this the academy has veered away from mcuh that is essential to the revitalization of social theory today. This fits implicitly into our approach to the democratization of theorizing, and our consequent obligation to reach out to the community across the traditional barriers of town and gown.
This relates also to the complicity of denial. More soon . . . jeanne. January 25, 2002.
