First step in writing. Review the theory upon which you are basing your project. The primary purpose of this section is to conceptually link ideas from the literature to your project. In Pat's case, as I recall from over the years, she has integrated many areas of research. I list them here in the approximate chronological order in which I recall her exploring them.

• Situational leadership. Pat will review the concepts she took from this literature and discuss their importance to her work.
• Thomas Szas' philosophy of psychological health and growth. Pat always liked his approach and has undoubtedly built this theory into her work with students and teaching.
• Advising as teaching.. NACADA. In this section Pat will explore the many approaches to teaching, not all of which take place in a classroom. This section will explore aspects of teaching to a broader community - students in the University Advisement Center.
• Pedagogical theory. Educators like McLaren on Paulo Freire and Che Guevara. bell hooks, Montessori, radical pedagogy, Alfie Kohn, Jonathan Kozol, etc. This section will explore aspects of social justice and education, including meaningful liberal arts education for those not destined to or desirous of becoming academic scholars. Will include a section on public intellectuals, as defined by Edward Said.
• Learning theorists. Concepts on how we learn. Edward T. Hall, Jerome Bruner, J.T. Guilford, Herbart, B.F. Skinner, Bloom and Krathwohl, etc.

• Berthena's Project

  • Stage of Process: Selection of Project

    Berthena is fascinated by her learning and seeks continually to turn that learning to the profit of young blacks who have not been afforded such opportunities. Her dilemma in delimiting her topic is that she has had such diverse experiences. She is active and influential amongst survivors of breast cancer. That has led her to consider working with black women in rural areas who need access to better information and testing for breast cancer.

    Berthena is also active within her church and missionary community. In that connection, she has strong interests in helping those who are suffering in postcolonial regimes in Africa. This makes our present efforts to set up a network of support with Zambia and Zimbabwe attractive as a project. Berthena would facilitate our contact with local faith-based organizations in identifying needs and connecting the right people to provide support here in our local communities.

    And Berthena finds it impossible to not try to save every black child she encounters. To that end, she has contacted Yvonne Braithwaite Burke's local office to organize such services. Berthena will need to match her skills to local community needs and then coordinate efforts to meet those needs.

  • Review of Literature

    It seems to me that the following areas of theory would be helpful to Berthena's project. Of course, she will have to settle on a topic for her final review.

    • Critical race theory. Review of the extent to which blacks have been handicapped by slavery and its resulatant discrimination, and the costs still incurred by that historical discrimination.

    • Self esteem literature. The importance of and means to strengthen self-esteem as a tool to better self care.
