Based on Fourth Week Fall Rosters, dated September 22, 2003:

  1. Acone Pat

September 25, 2003: Pat it was a joy to watch you in that group last night that went right across the classroom with Dwayne and Antointette and Latoya and Rita and you and Graham and Linda. I've never seen a political discussion so heated and yet so open and caring and non-judgmental of each other. The only one who violated illocutionary discourse was me when I yelped at Linda and Jesus and Dwayne and maybe Graham that that was not my version of freedom to have anyone run who wants to. I'll write that out today. There was simply no way to lecture in the middle of that discussion. You've done a great job of sparking such discussions in all the classes.

  2. Adams, Crystal

  3. Arthurs, Holman

September 1, 2003: Missed you Wednesday night, Holman. Hope you're ok. jeanne

September 14, 2003: Our thoughts were with you last week. Hope to see you again soon. jeanne

  4. Bass, Sharon

September 25, 2003: Sharon, sorry I missed you when I was sick, but do stay in touch. jeanne

  5. Berry, Nyree

September 25, 2003: Nyree, I need to see you. Contact time is going to be necessary.

  6. Brandon, Brenda

  7. Brown, Eleanor

  8. Brown, Rita

September 25, 2003: Great discussion last night, Rita. I liked your stick figures; but you are an Other fully capable of answering, and I understand now what Bakhtin meant when he said What shall I say, when the Other may answer? That question does bring us up front with the need for mutual resect.

September 1, 2003: Missed you Wednesday night, Rita. Looking forward to seeing you. I know, I know, you know Arnold Schwarzenegger. jeanne

September 4, 2003: Missed you Wednesday night. Latoya would like to form a group to touch base on preparations for the exam. Let us know if you're interested. jeanne

  9. Bursey, Stephanie

I remember you from Wednesday evening, but I need to know more about you and be sure I get a face attached to the name.

  10. Casquino, Barbara

  11. Castro, Silvia

September 25, 2003: I remember talking to you on Wednesday, but I still don't have the face attached to the name. Need more practice. jeanne

  12. Collier, Audra

  13. Dole, Monique

September 25, 2003: I think I've got it right. You have the two rescued little cuties, yes? And you'll remind me to get your commentary up. jeanne

  14. Easley, Antoinette

September 25, 2003: Great discussion in class last night. I read the 'red chair' last night. It was painful. It feels like I got dropped right into the middle of something, and I can't get a reasonable orientation. I need some of Ausuabel's advance organizers. I'll try again later. jeanne

September 13, 2003: I'm glad that you came in to talk on Thursday evening. Sometimes it's hard to get a handle on what an author is saying. The first rule for handling that problem is to find someone who knows more than you do about that author. You have already tried that and it didn't work. OK. Second rule. Start tearing at the material until you can relate it to something you do understand and then start asking questions from there. Let's try that approach now.

September 1, 2003: Glad to see you in a graduate course, Antoinette. jeanne

  15. Forte, Henry

September 25, 2003: Your regular attendance is appreciated. And though you haven't said much to me, I saw that you were involved in that cross-room recall discussion going on Wednesday night.

  16. Garcia, Jesus

September 25, 2003: Your contributions on how others were looking on our recall caught everyone's attention. Glad you were able to contribute that. jeanne

  17. Giddings, Shannon

September 25, 2003: Now I have a face to go with the writings. Remind me to put up your commentary. No time this morning. jeanne

September 1, 2003: Great submission. I'm interested in some of your ideas. I think, however, you need to read Why jeanne says don't just answer the questions. I'd like to talk about multiple choice exams in class, about how they are confusing, and how one can better understand them, and I'd also like to talk about your idea that writing relieves the tension of the dramas we're living. jeanne

September 14, 2003: Shannon, I know things were hectic Wednesday, but I really would like you to bring u some of your questions on relieving tension in the dramas of everyday life. jeanne

  18. Gilmore-Jones, Carolyn

September 25, 2003: Hoping to see more of you as soon as the crises are over. jeanne

  19. Graham, Jr., Lewis

September 25, 2003: And here all along I thought Graham was your first name! Good discussion on Wednesday night. I think you're right on the strategic aspect of the recall election. But I hope that your prediction that we will lose rights we'll never see again in California is a little apocalyptic. People are slowly waking up to demand answerability. jeanne

  20. Hamilton, Andre

September 25, 2003: Andre, two students giggled and asked :Is Andre in here? I know there are things that take us all away at times. But we would be honored by your physical presence. jeanne

September 1, 2003: Missed you Wednesday night, Andre. Don't forget you need to sign a Practicum Contract. jeanne

September 1, 2003: Hello, Andre! Where are you? Do I have our time schedules mixed up? jeannne

  21. Harrod, Kiana

  22. Henderson, Kristine

September 25, 2003: Hello! I realize you added late, but I don't think I know you. jeanne

  23. Keffelew, Elfykendu

September 25, 2003: Elfy, I'm delighted at your proposal to include Africa in our visual essay project. jeanne

  24. Knox, Alan

September 25, 2003: Alan, I'm wondering if you couldn't share a very nice essay on your grand daughter with the painting you've already done. I have the photograph, and you could write a beautiful piece on answerability. jeanne

September 14, 2003:Good to have our discussion on practical means of dealing with organizations that mean to keep certain scenarios secret and non-answerable. There is great risk, since the organization has natural protective devices built in, and these counter most attempts at answerability. That doesn't mean that one must be silenced. It means that one must recognize that breaking the silence is counter-normative, therefore unsupported by the majority of other silenced individuals, and risky both to the Other who wishes to be heard and to the existing patterns of the organization.

I missed Janice, too. I hope she comes back next week.

September 1, 2003: Very impressed by your cousin's (uncle's) book. But Arnold got me a car this weekend, so I don't have any money to buy the two books with now. Give me a couple of weeks. jeanne

  25. Lewis, Latoya

September 1, 2003: I'm delighted to find you in my graduate classes now. Remember Women in Crime? jeanne

    September 1, 2003:

  26. Machneva, Larisa

September 25, 2003: Larisa, I remember an exchanage with you in class last night, but I forgot the content. E-mail me, so I can include it. Pat also spoke of your participation last week when I was sick. Be sure I know about that. jeanne

September 1, 2003: Well, at least I've got your name and face down now. But the mother in me is going to fuss at you for smoking. If it's as hard to quit as it is to lose 5 pounds, I guess I understand. We'll leave it to my doctor to fuss. jeanne

  27. McKinley, Nita

September 27, 2003: Nita, you're taking theory? jeanne

  28. Monge, Emily

  29. Morris, Patricia

  30. Nelson, Robert

Monday, September 29, 2003: Glad to see you last week, Robert. jeanne

  31. Ordorica, Adrienne

September 25, 2003: Beautiful story you told of your students. The picture is great, but don't be afraid to use stick figures and get one of us in art to share with paintings, if it's paintings you want. jeanne

  32. Quiette, Brandi

September 25, 2003: Brandi, I don't remember any transactions with you this semester. Where are you???? jeanne

  40. Saldana, Guadalupe

September 25, 2003: Lupe, I was very impressed with all you had to share on Wednesday night. I was having trouble in all the confusion hearing everything that you said in the class break, but I know that you'll remind me and we'll get it up. I look forward to your project, especially the scenes of the children playing in the alley. Talk about wake up calls. jeanne

  41. Sanders, Dwayne

September 25, 2003: Good participation in Wednesday night's discussion. jeanne

  48. Lisa Thomas

September 25, 2003: Lisa, I recall a transaction with you on Wednesday evening, but it's lost in the chaos of recall. The red jacket, right? You came up to the office. Did I get all your questions answered? jeanne

  49. Tran, Hao

September 25, 2003: I appreciate your silent attentiveness, but I'll be glad when you find a way that's comfortable for you to share some of your thoughts with us. jeanne

September 14, 2003: You are very quiet. I remember trying to get you to talk about your children because Penny was so involved with telling me about her daughter. But that didn't work out, since no children. I need to know something about you to start the learning dialog. Your work? Your family? Why you are interested in sociology? jeanne
