    On Latessa's noon lecture

I was able to attend the lecture by Edward Latessa on Friday. Dr. Latessa's discussion on reducing recidivism was interesting and thought provoking. He provided well researched information and help me formulate an balanced opinion on the matter. I found his opinion on targeting multiple social risk factors most interesting.

jason -- can you relate his lecture to the class?

On prophetic criticism and the Grammies

I think I like Prophetic criticism as it relates to the grammys, because it challenges us to learn from history. It's true people forget the stereotypes thier own races went through and now they attack or use stereotypes to label other groups that are being oppressed and stigmatized against.

christina -- good application of theory! does anarchist crim apply to this issue as well? why or why not?

    On mascots

i think this guy makes a good point. and he does it well by sending out emails to ppl requesting we write letters in their favor. it's a good idea, in my opinion. but im' a sports fan, i don't see a problem having mascots as mascots. i have yet to see an angry irishman mad at the "fighting irish"

nick -- how does all this relate to mark denning's talk? which theory in the arrigo best applies to this issue?

From CRMJ 490: Media, Crime & Criminal Justice

On the documentary, "End of the Nightstick"

I just wanted to make a quick comment on the documentary film we saw in class today. Police brutality is definitely a major problem in the United States. I found the electroshock black box particularly shocking and brutal. These officers need to be prosecuted.

jason -- want to follow-up what's happened since this documentary was made?

On the Latessa lecture at Case High School

First hand experience vs. Media Report: The Journal Times did a pretty good report on Edward Latessa's speech at Case Highschool, but failed to mention what I thought was one of the more important subjects he touched upon. Assesments. It seemed to me that that he was pushing for our county reps. to evaluate our current assesment process and possibly change it starting from the very top and work our way down. Over all I think the media did a decent job of reporting, but I did notice some errors which is to be expected of the Journal Times.

scott -- good idea to compare being there with the newspaper report. if you were the reporter, what would you have focused on? why? why are "some errors" to be expected?
