CRIME ALERT UPDATE

Suspects Arrested in Theft of Catalytic Converters

On September 4, 2009, a multi-agency task force arrested 2 suspects for stealing at least 60 catalytic converters from vehicles in parking lots at  UCLA, USC, LAX, Los Angeles, Culver City, and Marina Del Rey.

Information received from a campus community member regarding suspicious activity in CSUDH parking lot 7 matched the above suspect vehicle description and suspect descriptions. We believe that these suspects are responsible for our campus catalytic converter thefts. Detective Bennie Williams is currently working with the task force to develop evidence to tie these suspects to our thefts and file additional charges.

We encourage the campus community to continue to report suspicious activity anywhere on campus to our Police Dispatcher at (310)243-3639.

Suspicious activity includes, people loitering near vehicles, “working” underneath a vehicle, idling vehicles or other unusual activity.

We have increased our patrol visibility in the campus parking lots. We have expanded our Student Patrol Program and will be stationing Student Escorts in our parking lots Monday – Thursday from 8am – 11pm. These students will have radios and act as “eyes and ears” for the police in addition to providing information services to the campus community and visitors.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Chief Susan Sloan or Detective Bennie Williams at the University Police Department (310)243-3639 or via email.

Vehicle Component Theft

Crime: Vehicle Burglary / Component Theft
Date: September 02, 2009
Weapon: Hands, tools
Location: Lot # 1, 7, 13
Vehicles: (3) Toyotas / year: 1997 & 2000, (1) Nissan / year 1989
Suspects: No description reported

On 09/02/2009 (Wednesday) between the hours of 10:30 A.M. and 7:30 P.M. there were four thefts of Catalytic Converters from vehicles in the parking lots.

The suspects have targeted SUV type vehicles. These vehicles are the easiest to get under to remove the Catalytic Converters. This crime takes only 30 to 60 seconds to complete.

It is believed the suspects wait until the cars are unattended then approach the vehicle and crawl under the vehicle to remove the Catalytic Converter.  It is more than likely that the suspects are working in teams of two or possibly three.

The University Police Department has increased patrol in and around all parking lots. Furthermore the CSU- Police Department is in the process of acquiring additional personnel to assist in monitoring the parking lots.

We encourage all of the campus community to report any unusual activities or suspicious persons to the campus police department.  You can call Dispatch at (310)243-3639 or activate campus call boxes if convenient.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents, please contact the University Police Department at (310)243-3639 or  Ext. 3001 or via email at bewilliams@csudh.edu (Detective Bennie Williams).
