ECLP builds on the positive results of our recently completed WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) regional accreditation review, with an emphasis on its thematic component—student success—and with appropriate emphasis on Hispanic students. The Student Success Report highlighted the under-preparedness of CSUDH students as one of the leading academic problems facing the campus. Related to this under-preparedness is institutional image.  In particular the grant’s single Activity will center on INCREASING CRITICAL LITERACY (CL)—that is, the reading, writing and critical thinking skills of our transfer Hispanic and other students taking upper-division courses. It has four components: (1) Faculty Development, with a faculty seminar to produce CL courses and a related lecture series; (2) Curriculum Development—infusing CL in three upper-division General Education courses and in courses in the major and developing an on-line upper division composition course; (3) an Enhanced Writing Center as part of our Center for Learning and Academic Support Services (C.L.A.S.S.); and (4) Assessment of entering transfer students to help them become more successful at the University.

We are located in CLASS (Center for Learning and Academic Support Services), SCC Bldg. 11. Our phone number is (310) 243-3672.
