The Certificate of Completion in Occupational Health & Safety for Managers and Supervisors is endorsed by the National Safety Council. CSUDH is an MCLE Provider (#3897) for HEX 946.
THE CERTIFICATE
Designed for Health & Safety officers and those planning
to enter the field, the program
will teach a person the skills
necessary to function in a Health and Safety Department and
to administer health and safety programs in an industrial
setting. Six core courses are required.
The total program awards up to 12 Continuing Education
Units (CEU's). Students
not pursuing the certificate may
take individual courses.
Topics covered include: OSHA Laws, Accident Investigation, worker's compensation, industrial hygiene, Cal/OSHA law, workplace hazards, safety and health program administration, terrorist violence in the workplace, safety and health for the construction industry, ergonomics, , and workplace safety.

THE LOCATION
All classes are held on campus on the CSUDH campus in
Carson. Environmental and
Occupational Health and Safety Classes
are convenient to people living and working in
or near Los
Angeles, Torrance, Long Beach, Carson, Compton, El Segundo,
Palos Verdes,
Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach,
San Pedro, Hawthorne, Gardena,
Lakewood, Paramount, Bellflower,
Downey, Inglewood and other parts of the South Bay
and Southern California.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The program will meet and satisfy ongoing CEU requirements
for the safety officer, registered environmental assessors,
certified safety professionals, certified industrial hygienists,
professional engineers and safety and occupational health
nurses. Supervisors, company owners, top and middle management,
loss control representatives, worker compensation administrators,
risk management, general managers, human resource managers,
and superintendents will also find this program a valuable
and important means of gaining professional knowledge.

Students may attend classes in any order according to
their needs. Courses are offered
at convenient times for working
adults.
OSHA Laws and Accident Investigation/Industrial Accident
Investigation
HEX 946 2.0 CEUs
Provides participants with the foundation and practical
application of current laws and
regulations to identify the
sources of injuries and illnesses in order to reduce them
in the
workplace. Legislation and defense for civil and criminal
liability from collection and identification
of accident evidence
will be covered.
Introduction to Workers' Compensation
HEX 947 2.0 CEUs
A comprehensive first-time look at the Workers' Compensation
system. Emphasis is placed on
both the employer's and employee's
rights and responsibilities in providing/receiving benefits
as applicable. Also, a look at ways to investigate possible
Workers' Compensation fraud and abuse.
Cal/OSHA Law
HEX 960 2.0 CEUs
Provides a basic foundation to understand, analyze and
apply federal and Cal/OSHA requirements. The current laws,
legislation and litigation arising out of the development
and application of environmental laws, dealing with the EPA
and RCRA programs and hazardous waste controls,
recent cases,
legislation and defenses for the new civil and criminal liability
cases will be covered.

Recognition and Control of Workplace Hazards
HEX 979 2.0 CEUs
A review of chemical and mechanical hazards known to be
in the general workplace with an emphasis on logical discovery.
Students will learn how to treat hazards in order to provide
a
safe and healthy workplace for their organization.
Ergonomics
HEX 920 2.0 CEUs
Focuses on basic principles and applications of ergonomics,
as applied to the office and
industrial environments. Students
will gain knowledge in the following areas: ergonomics
as
a science, the prevention of cumulative trauma disorders,
program implementation
strategies, workplace design, and current
standards and regulations.
Foundations of Safety and Health Program Administration
HEX 981 2.0 CEUs
Class covers implementation of injury and illness prevention
programs, typical health
and safety problems, program responsibility,
employee compliance, communications to the employees, hazard
evaluations, injury and illness investigations, correction
of unsafe or
unhealthful conditions, employee training and
recordkeeping in an industrial setting.
