PREPARING FOR FUNDING – THREE PHASE BUSINESS PLAN & PRESENTATION DEVELOPMENT at CSU Dominguez Hills
A professional business plan is needed to evaluate a new venture proof of concept and attract funding. It is also recommended for small businesses that want additional debt or equity funding and/or to joint venture with larger companies.
This program by Artilient Capital Partners™ offers all facets of business plan development, including assessing the market and competitive environment, developing your concept and growth strategies, creating marketing approaches, identifying a cohesive management team, designing operations, and developing financial projections.
7/18/2009: ½-day business plan workshop to prepare the participant in learning best practices when documenting their plan; including the business plan development process, what investors look for, identifying elements of risk, developing financial forecasts, use of funds.
8/1/2009: ½-day written business plan workshop to refine the participant’s documented
business plan. Facilitators will review each participant’s plan one week prior to
the workshop and will provide additional individual and group mentoring during
the workshop.
8/15/2009: ½-day business plan presentation workshop to help the participant design and
create from their completed, written business plan, a 8 – 10 minute presentation
that funders expect. At the end of this workshop, each participant will have
completed their presentation draft.
Classroom component - The instructors present content and provide additional information in facilitated lectures, presentations, and discussions.
Workshop component – The participant will practice and apply what you have learned in group activities and individual work on exercises, case studies, scenarios, and assignments.

Business Plan Competition
The CBRID-CSUDH Business Plan Competition is a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs to present their completed business plans to judges, who will select the winners. Only the 12 best business plans chosen from the workshop shall be eligible to participate in this competition. This competition attracts an audience of venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, industry specialists, attorneys, local business leaders, alumni, students, media representatives and executives of Artilient Capital Partners™. All teams make a live interactive presentation to convince the panel of judges of their business’s viability. After these presentations, the judges adjourn and deliberate. The entire audience convenes for a reception followed by the awards ceremony and attended and judged by bankers, investors and SBA officers.

Jerry Knotts

Jerry Knotts is an entrepreneur and has worked with entrepreneurs for over 20 years. He co-founded the Thousand Oaks Venture Forum, was co-operator of numerous venture forums thoughout Southern California, and helped create the Central Coast Venture Forum. Over this period of time, he created four companies and mentored over 250 start-ups.
Currently, Jerry is President, California Coast Venture Forum, Inc., Santa Barbara and serves as a business plan reviewer and mentor for both the Los Angeles Regional Technology Alliance (LARTA Institute) and the Southern California BioMed Council (SoCALBIO).
Jerry serves as Chairman, Executive Committee for BioQuip Products, Inc., and as a member of the Board of Directors for Qualified Technologies Inc.
He is a member of the Board of Counselors for the California Lutheran University (CLU) Business School and an advisor to the CLU Entrepreneur Roundtable (CLU-ER); President, South Coast Youth Leadership Conference, Inc.; Founder and Chairman, Stagecoach Inn Museum Foundation; and Treasurer, Youth Enrichment Foundation, Inc.
His previous executive positions included Vice-President/General Manager, Defense Electronics Division, California Microwave and Vice-President for Programs & Business Development at American Nucleonics Corporation.
As a business consultant, he provides strategic and financial planning services to small and medium sized companies through his Strategery Management Consulting firm. His clients included, Lockheed Aircraft Services,L-3 Communications, American Nucleonics, California Microwave, and many others.
Jerry holds a BSEE (Electronics Engineering) from The Pennsylvania State University; and an MBA from Auburn University. In addition, he is a graduate of the Defense Acquisition University, Industrial College of the Armed Forces, Air Command and Staff College , and Air War College. He is a Senior Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE); Chairman, IEEE Buenaventura Life Member Affinity Group, and Secretary, IEEE Buenaventura Section. Jerry is a licensed, Registered Professional Engineer, and life member of the Texas, California, and National Society of Professional Engineers.
Jerry has served as a Ventura County Airport Commissioner, and now serves as a Lay Arbitor for the Ventura County Bar.
Michael D. Miller

Mike helps executives evaluate their organization’s design, accounting, financial and human capital strong / weak points. He provides leader and manager development support, while helping executives plan and implement strategic initiatives. Mike is a member of www.allcities.org, and is the Moderator of their monthly Green Business Network Group. He is a member of the California's GREEN Workforce Coalition. Mike is also an advisor to Artilient's Clean / Green Business Incubator management team and its CBRID Incubator mentoring and managing practice, CBRID. Previously, he spent fourteen years in corporate America with FORTUNE 500 firms including the Bendix and Allied Signal corporations, and has been an owner or partner in two firms. Positions he held included acquisition manager, divisional marketing manager, new product development manager, distribution manager, national sales manager and marketing communications manager. Mike has been the keynote speaker to organizations such as the California Cast Metals Association, City of Simi Valley, Distribution Management Association, Loyola Marymount University’s MBA Alumni Association, and the Woodworking Institute of California on the topics of leadership and strategy development.
Mike has been an adjunct professor in California Lutheran University’s (Thousand Oaks, CA) evening MBA program for working adults since 1989. Last year, Mike helped start California Lutheran University’s first Entrepreneur Roundtable program, designed to help entrepreneurs start their enterprises outside of the classroom. He has also served on the Advisory Board of the Southern California Edison/California Lutheran University Venture Forum from 1993 to 1998, a program designed to help match debt / equity funders with start-up businesses.
He holds a B.S., Industrial Engineering from Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA), and a M.B.A. from Loyola Marymount University, (Los Angeles, CA). Mike has also been certified by the Center for Creative Leadership (Greensboro, North Carolina) to conduct 360º leader, manager and team assessment and development processes / programs.
