Educator Courses Via Distance Learning

These courses are computer-based training which you can complete at a pace that fits your schedule. The instructor is accessed by a toll-free number or via email for technical or professional questions. While the courses are online, CDs are available for those students who do not have a reliable, high-speed internet connection. The only exception is the Ethics course, which does not have a CD option. You will receive the course materials via e-mail or regular mail after you register, depending on whether you requested the online or CD version at the time of registration. The courses have been developed by Virtual Education Software, Inc. (VESi), and are offered by CSU Dominguez Hills in partnership with VESi.

Topics covered include managing disruptive behavior, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), violence in schools, drugs and alcohol use and abuse, learning disabilities, Autism and Asperger's Disorder, special needs students, behavior assessments, high achievers, aggressive behavior in the classroom, child abuse (including neglected children), traumatized children, assessing student learning, teaching diversity, reading fundamentals, infant and toddler mental health, family-centered services from birth to five, early childhood program planning, early childhood observation and assessment, and early childhood typical and atypical development.

All work must be completed by the end of each term. Please check the schedule for schedule and cost information. Be advised that the extension units earned in these classes are not applicable to the baccalaureate degree at CSUDH.

While the courses are online, CDs are available for those students who do not have a reliable, high-speed internet connection. The only exception is the ethics course, which does not have a CD option.

These course have been modified and now satisfy most districts' requirements.

In addition to reading materials and exams, these courses require additional writing assignments regarding a Critical Thinking Question (minimum of 500 words) at the end of every chapter (courses have four to six chapters). Students must also review and write an essay (minimum 200 words) on three relevant journal articles of your choice on topics related to the course.

You must complete each examination with a minimum score of 70% or higher and complete ALL writing assignments to pass this course.

Students are expected to complete all coursework within the same semester they registered for the course.  If a student cannot complete the course within the semester, they must contact VESi prior to the semester deadline to request an extension.  Extension will only be granted for severely extenuating circumstances and if substantial work has been done in the course.  The student must then complete all coursework by the date given by VESi.  If you do not complete by the end of the term and have not received approval for an extension, an F will automatically be reported.

Technical Requirements
Students receive course materials by e-mail or regular mail after registration. If you choose to take the course online, you must have a reliable, high-speed Internet connection. With the online option, all data saves to the VESi servers, so you may use more than one computer to complete your course. If you choose the CD option, all user data is saved on your computer's hard drive, and you must stay on the same computer from start to finish.

The following requirements are needed:
Macintosh Operating Systems -- Mac OS 9.x or OSX, 1 GB of RAM and 5MB of free hard disk space, 15” or larger color monitor with a minimum resolution of 800 x 600, and a printer connected
Windows Operating Systems -- Windows XP Home, Professional or newer, 1GB of RAM and 5MB of free hard disk space, 15” or larger color monitor with a minimum resolution of 800 x 600, and a printer connected to your computer.
