Configuring POP3 and SMTP on the
Exchange System
The following instructions are the steps required to
configure POP3 and SMTP for use with Microsoft Outlook Express V5.0 on Windows
9x/2000. This paper assumes that
Outlook Express has not been previously configured. The information presented can be used to configure Outlook 2000,
Eudora and Netscape Messenger.
When starting Outlook Express you will be asked if you would
like Outlook Express to be your default mail handler. If you will be using Outlook Express select yes. The Internet Connection Wizard will start
and prompt you for the account and server settings.
- Enter
your name as you want it to appear in your messages and click Next
(Figure 1).
- Enter
your e-mail address (Figure 2). {The following formats are temporary
until all users have been migrated} :
- If
you previously had a GroupWise/RESEARCH account use the format “username@research.csudh.edu”
- If
you previously had a DHVX20 account use “username@csudh.edu”.
- Click
Next.

- Verify
the incoming mail server selected is POP3. Enter “pop.csudh.edu” as the
POP3 server and “smtp.csudh.edu” as the Outgoing (SMTP) server then
click Next. (Figure 3).
- Enter
your account name and optionally select to have Outlook Express remember
your password and enter it in the text box. It is recommended for security that you do not do this and
uncheck the Remember Password box and click on Next (Figure 4).

- You
have now completed the Internet Connection Wizard, click on Finish
to complete this step.
- Outlook
Express should now be open and there are a couple more steps to complete
the configuration. From the
Outlook Express menu select Tools then Accounts… The
Internet Accounts dialog box will display (Figure 5). Select the Mail
tab and click on Properties.
- The
pop.csudh.edu Properties dialog box will display (Figure 6). Click on the Servers tab and
click the “My server requires authentication” check box. You will be prompted for your username
and password each time to send and receive e-mail. If you leave Outlook Express open it
will only prompt you the first time, if you previously selected Outlook
Express to remember your password it will not prompt you.

- If
you are configuring Outlook Express on a system other than your office
system you may want to leave copies of the messages on the server. To do this select the Advanced tab
(Figure 7) and check the “Leave a copy of messages on server” check
box. You can now click OK and
Close to complete the configuration.
- When
you send and receive message you will be presented with a dialog box
similar to the one in Figure 8 that will prompt you for your username and
password.
