MSN 501 NURSING INFORMATICS (1)

Examines contribution of nursing informatics to advanced roles is examined, including relationships among critical thinking, computer literacy, information literacy, and nursing informatics. Evaluates exercises in data/information management applied to nursing research, theory, and advanced role.

MSN 504 ADVANCED NURSING ROLES (2)

Prerequisite: MSN 501 or concurrent enrollment. Facilitates transition into advanced nursing roles. Explores the requirements for and the regulation of advanced roles, including dealing with role ambiguity and changing role boundaries. Examines participation in the profession and exertion of leadership in the profession and the health care system.

MSN 510 THEORIES FOR ADVANCED NURSING ROLES (3)

Prerequisite: MSN 501 or concurrent enrollment. Focuses on the use of nursing theory in advanced nursing roles in response to health related human phenomena in diverse settings. Explores the evolution of nursing models and theories, including history, philosophy of science, and utilization.

MSN 513 HEALTH CARE POLICY/ECONOMICS (3)

Prerequisite: MSN 501 or concurrent enrollment. Explores characteristics of the current healthcare environment with emphasis on advanced nursing practice, as it pertains to policy development, health planning, and economic management at the national, state and local levels. Analyzes multidisciplinary decisions regarding equitable distribution of existing resources, policy development, program evaluation, and client/population outcomes.

MSN 514 HEALTH PROMOTION AND DISEASE PREVENTION (3)

Prerequisite: MSN 501 or concurrent enrollment. Examines traditional and alternative theoretical and conceptual bases of wellness from the perspective of nursing and health. Focuses is on the assessment, diagnosis, intervention and outcome evaluation of wellness and disease prevention needs and issues encountered in advanced nursing roles.

MSN 530 RESEARCH UTILIZATION IN ADVANCED NURSING PRACTICE (3)

Prerequisites: Upper division statistics and research courses; MSN 501, concurrent enrollment. Prepares the nurse to critique and apply research findings in nursing practice. Relates critical thinking to problem identification, assessment of data, and outcome evaluation. Examines research methodologies, including qualitative and quantitative approaches, and relates them to nursing informatics.

MSN 535 ETHICS IN ADVANCED NURSING ROLES (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 501 or concurrent enrollment. Examines the theoretical/conceptual bases of ethics from a nursing perspective. Focuses on the analysis, synthesis, and resolution of ethical issues encountered in advanced nursing roles. Explores ethical relationships among nursing theory, research, and practice in healthcare delivery to a diverse population.

MSN 521 NURSE EDUCATOR: THEORY (4)

Prerequisites: MSN 501, 504, 510, 513, 514, 530, 535 and 523 or 537 Concurrent enrollment in MSN 591 is required. Examines the role of the nurse educator in community, academic and agency settings. Analyzes, synthesizes, and evaluates curriculum develpment. Emphasizes transforming a curricular framework into instructional design reflecting current learning theory, technology, and healthcare systems.

MSN 527: ADVANCED HEALTH ASSESSMENT (3)

Prerequisites: MSN 501, 504, 510, 513, 514, 530, 535 or permission of Chair. Examines theory and practice of advanced health assessment, and application to the advanced practice role. Emphasizes analysis and synthesis of subjective and objective date to identify health problems and develop management plans. Health promotion, risk factor identification, and recognition of common abnormalities in advanced practice are explore.

MSN 551 NURSE EDUCATOR: ROLE PERFORMANCE I (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 521. Concurrent enrollment in 592 is required. Clinical focus provides the basis for implementing the nurse educator role in an educational institution or health care setting. The student will apply and evaluate didactic and clinical teaching/learning concepts and strategies, with a minimum of 96 preceptorship hours. Credit/No Credit grading.

MSN 561 NURSE EDUCATOR: ROLE PERFORMANCE II (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 551. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 592 is required. The student demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge and competency with a selected population. Clinical knowledge and skill are applied to a teaching situation, with a minimum of 96 preceptorship hours. Credit/No Credit grading.

MSN 571 NURSE EDUCATOR: ROLE PERFORMANCE III (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 561. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 592 is required. Student synthesizes knowledge and skill from previous graduate theory and clinical coursework in the nurse educator role in a selected educational institution or health care setting, with a minimum of 96 preceptorship hours. Credit/No Credit grading.

MSN 591 APPLIED RESEARCH FOR NURSING PRACTICE I (1)

Prerequisite: MSN 530. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 521; or 524 and 554; or 525 and 553 are required depending on role option. Focuses on developing a research question/hypothesis and methodological issues pertaining to specific role emphasis populations. Concentrates on design, sampling, instrumentation, and data collection methods.

MSN 592 APPLIED RESEARCH FOR NURSING PRACTICE II (2)

Prerequisite: MSN 591. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 551, 561 and 571; or 564, 574 and 584; or 563, 573 and 583 are required depending on role option. Provides opportunity to utilize research findings through the conduct of a study focused on a special population related to the student's role option practice as Educator, Parent-child Clinical Nurse Specialist, or Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist.

CNS PARENT-CHILD NURSING ROLE COURSES

MSN 523 CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST: PARENT CHILD I (3)

Prerequisites: MSN 501, 504, 510, 513, 514, 530, 535, 526 & 527. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 553 & 591 are required. An academic, upper division undergraduate Health Assessment and Pathophysiology is required. Focuses on the child and family from childbearing and early childrearing through adolescence, emphasizing biopsychosocial and developmental aspects of child, family and parent growth and development.

MSN 525 CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST: PARENT CHILD II (3)

Prerequisite: MSN 501, 504, 510, 513, 514, 530, 535, 523, 526, and 527. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 553 and 591 are required. Building on CNS Parent Child I, Pharmacology and Advanced Health Assessment, the advanced practice role of the nurse as clinician, researcher, educator, consultant in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of programs for special populations is emphasized.

MSN 526: PHARMACOLOGY (3)

Prerequisites: MSN 501, 504, 510, 513, 514, 530, 535 or permission of Chair. Examines the theoretical basis for pharmacological treatment of common health problems seen by advanced practice nurses. Discusses selected classifications of drugs. Explores ethical and legal issues of drug administration and the role of the advanced practice nurse.

MSN 527: ADVANCED HEALTH ASSESSMENT (3)

Prerequisites: MSN 501, 504, 510, 513, 514, 530, 535 or permission of Chair. Examines theory and practice of advanced health assessment, and application to the advanced practice role. Emphasizes analysis and synthesis of subjective and objective data to identify health problems and develop management plans. MSN 553 CHILD BEARING AND REARING: ROLE PERFORMANCE: TODDLER: PARENT-CHILD CNS (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 501, 504, 510, 513, 514, 530, 535, 526 & 527. Concurrent enrollment in 523, 525 and 591 are required. An opportunity for the student to implement the clinical nurse specialist role in a selected health care setting which focuses on the childbearing family. The student will provide comprehensive advanced clinical nursing care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care team. "CR/NC grading"

MSN 563 CHILD REARING ROLE PERFORMANCE: PRE-SCHOOL AGE: PARENT-CHILD CNS (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 553. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 592 is required. Presents an opportunity for the student to initiate the clinical nurse specialist role in a selected health care setting which focuses on the emerging family. The student provides advanced clinical nursing care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care team for a minimum of 96 clinical hours. Credit/No Credit grading.

MSN 573 CHILD REARING ROLE PERFORMANCE: ADOLESCENT: PARENT-CHILD CNS (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 563. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 592 is required. Presents an opportunity for the student to initiate the clinical nurse specialist role in a selected health care setting which focuses on the childrearing family. The student will provide comprehensive advanced clinical nursing care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care team for a minimum of 96 clinical hours. Credit/No Credit grading.

MSN 583 CULMINATING ROLE PERFORMANCE: PARENT-CHILD CNS (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 573. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 592 is required. An opportunity for the student to select a field setting and operationalize a comprehensive CNS role in a focused clinical specialty for a minimum of 96 clinical hours. Credit/No Credit grading.

MSN 591 APPLIED RESEARCH FOR NURSING PRACTICE I (1)

Prerequisite: MSN 530. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 524 and 554; or 525 and 553; or 521; or 522; or 556 and 557 are required depending on role option. Focuses on developing a research question/hypothesis and methodological issues pertaining to specific role emphasis populations. Particular attention is paid to design, sampling, instrumentation, and data collection methods.

MSN 592 APPLIED RESEARCH FOR NURSING PRACTICE II (2)

Prerequisite: MSN 591. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 551, 561 and 571; or 564, 574 and 584; or 563, 573 and 583; or 552, 562 and 572; or 566 and 567 are required depending on role option. Provides opportunity to utilize research findings through the conduct of a study focused on a special population related to the student's role option practice as Educator, Administrator, Family Nurse Practitioner, Parent-child Clinical Nurse Specialist, or Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist.

CNS GERONTOLOGY NURSING ROLE COURSES

MSN 524 CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST: GERONTOLOGY (6)

Prerequisites: MSN 501, 504, 510, 513, 514, 530, 535, 526 & 527. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 554 and 591 are required. An academic, upper division undergraduate Health Assessment and Pathophysiology is required. Theoretical perspectives on aging and normative aging processes within the context of the family and society. Nursing assessment, diagnosis, intervention and evaluation will be applied to common alterations in health as well as to high-risk human responses to health problems associated with aging. The advanced nursing role in promoting, maintaining and advocating health for senior adults is emphasized including fostering self-care in the senior population.

MSN 526: PHARMACOLOGY (3)

Prerequisites: MSN 501, 504, 510, 513, 514, 530, 535 or permission of Chair. Examines the theoretical basis for pharmacological treatment of common health problems seen by advanced practice nurses. Discusses selected classifications of drugs. Explores ethical and legal issues of drug administration and the role of the advance practice nurse.

MSN 527: ADVANCED HEALTH ASSESSMENT (3)

Prerequisites: MSN 501, 504, 510, 513, 514, 530, 535 or permission of Chair. Examines theory and practice of advanced health assessment, and application to the advanced practice role. Emphasizes analysis and synthesis of subjective and objective date to identify health problems and develop management plans. Health promotion, risk factor identification, and recognition of common abnormalities in advanced practice are explore.

MSN 537: GERONTOLOGY FOR NURSES (3) ELECTIVE

Prerequisites: MSN 501 & 504. Focuses on the health care delivery system and public policies that affect older adults. Examines theory and current research associated with common clinical problems and therapeutic nursing interventions. Emphasizes nursing care of at risk groups.

MSN 554 GERONTOLOGY CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST: ROLE PERFORMANCE (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 501, 504, 510, 513, 514, 530, 535, 526 & 527. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 524 and 591 is required. Presents an opportunity to implement the gerontological CNS role in a selected health care setting. Emphasizes health screening and clinical decision making related to ethics, legal and regulatory influences on care of elderly persons. Instructor and clinical preceptor guide experiences with a minimum of 96 clinical hours.. Credit/No Credit grading.

MSN 564 THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS: CNS GERONTOLOGY ROLE PERFORMANCE (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 554. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 592 is required. Focuses on application and evaluation of an advanced practice model under the guidance of a clinical preceptor and instructor for a minimum of 96 clinical hours. Therapeutic nursing interventions are investigated for theory and research foundations and implemented in providing care to elderly clients. Credit/No Credit grading.

MSN 574 THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS: ROLE PERFORMANCE GERONTOLOGY CNS (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 564. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 592 is required. Predents an opportunity to develop the CNS role of teacher/leader. Emphasizes staff development to enhance care provision to elderly clients and program development and evaluation for at risk groups of elderly clients. Instructor and clinical preceptor guide experiences for a minimum of 96 clinical hours. Credit/No Credit grading.

MSN 584 CULMINATING ROLE PERFORMANCE: GERONTOLOGY CNS (2)

Prerequisites: MSN 574. Concurrent enrollment in MSN 592 is required. Continuation of CNS gerontology role development. Emphasizes the researcher, case manager and consultant subroles. Opportunity is provided, under clinical preceptor and instructor guidance to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of the CNS role in selected health care settings for a minimum of 96 clinical hours. Credit/No Credit grading.
