Certificate of Completion in
Project Management
The Program
Obtain the management skills required to bring
projects in on time and within budget. The results of successfully
completing coursework in this program will be visible in your
overall job performance, leadership effectiveness, risk analysis
and decision-making capabilities, and improved management
style.
The curriculum is based on an organized sequence of courses
that cover the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK),
which serves as the fundamental knowledge base for project
management.
As a result, those who qualify will be better prepared to
sit for the Project Management Professional (PMP) Exam. Recognized
domestically and internationally, the PMP Certification has
set a standard for excellence in project management. Obtaining
use of the PMP designation distinguishes you as an expert
in the profession.
Location
All classes are offered at California State University,
Dominguez Hills in Carson. Project Management classes are
convenient for people living and working in Los Angeles, Torrance,
Long Beach, Carson, Compton, El Segundo, Palos Verdes, Manhattan
Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, San Pedro, Hawthorne,
Gardena, Lakewood, Paramount, Bellflower, Downey, Inglewood
and other parts of the South Bay and Southern California.
Who Should Attend?
Individuals in any discipline who work on projects in either
the public or private sector will benefit from course work.
Those with 3-5 years work experience who are not currently
working in this field will be prepared to pursue career opportunities
specifically in the area of project management upon completion
of the program.

Certificate Requirements
A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of five
required courses.
After you have completed all requirements, you may request
to receive your official certificate by completing the Request
for Certificate Form and returning it to our offices.
Courses
Introduction & Overview of Project Management
PMX 900
0.6 CEU’s
Students gain an understanding of project management as
a scientific and professional business function. This is
the first course in a five-course certification and will
be the prerequisite for all other classes. The Course introduces
detailed descriptions of projects, project life cycles,
and project integration.
STUDENTS MUST HAVE PURCHASED TEXTBOOKS PRIOR TO
CLASS.
*Introduction &Overview of Project Management PMX 900
is a prerequisite for PMX 901, PMX 902, PMX 903, PMX 904
(which can be taken in any order).
Project Human Resource and Procurement Management
PMX 901
1.5 CEU’s
Students gain an understanding of the disciplines involved
in managing project team members and managing contracts
and purchase orders. Major human resource related topics
include project team organizations, responsibilities, team
building and leadership. Major procurement related topics
include contract specification, solicitation, award and
administration; contract types and billing/payment options.
Project Quality and Communications Management
PMX 902
1.5 CEU’s
Students gain an understanding of the disciplines involved
in managing project quality and communications. Major topics
related to quality include establishing a quality assurance
program, executing the appropriate quality control measures,
and assuring that the customer’s needs are met. Major
topics related to communications include the principles
of communication, how to improve the effectiveness of communications
and what specific communications tools are used on projects.
Project Risk and Scope Management
PMX 903
1.5 CEU’s
Students gain an understanding of the discipline involved
in managing project risk and scope. Major risk related topics
include the basic nature of project risk, as well as risk
assessment, analysis and mitigation. Major scope related
topics include defining the purpose and scope of the project,
planning the execution of the project, establishing and
using a work breakdown structure, controlling the scope
and verifying that the delivered project matches the specified
scope.
Project Time and Cost Management
PMX 904
1.5 CEU’s
Students gain an understanding of the disciplines involved
in managing the project schedule and expenditures. Major
time related topics include using the work breakdown structure
to establish the project schedule, optimizing the project
execution plan, establishing the project schedule baseline,
reporting actual costs and communicating project costs and
forecasts to the stakeholders. This course addresses the
benefits of a tight integration of the schedule and the
cost tracking systems.
Instructor Profile
Tammo T. Wilkens, P.E., PMP, has 28 years of experience
in planning, scheduling and project management. He has managed
various projects in a variety of industries and taught project
management courses at the University of Washington. His
range of projects include large capital project engineering
and design, large project construction in the private and
public sectors, as well as IT projects involving software
and hardware systems design and deliver. Mr. Wilkens has
made numerous presentations and published articles on the
subjects of scheduling, earned value management techniques,
cost control and configuration management. He has conducted
professional development programs in the area of project
management and taught PMP exam preparation courses.
