Summer Camp in Video Game Art and Design

The Program
This is a four-day workshop camp, Monday through
Thursday, July 13-16, 2009, 9:30am-4pm, including both morning and
afternoon sessions.
Morning Session: 9:30am- 12:00pm
Video Game Design: Character Design and Introduction to Flash Animation
Do you spend hours playing video games? Do you want
to design a game or have that creative spark for making a game challenging
and fun to play? Then sign them up for this introductory workshop.
From the history of games to designing characters, developing a
story line to basic motion and effects, this is an information-packed,
fun-filled workshop for aspiring game designers everywhere.
Afternoon session, 1:30pm-4pm
Computer Graphics: Illustration & Special Effects
A must for young computer graphic enthusiasts!
Students learn the step-by-step process for creating compelling
digital illustrations under the guidance of instructor Robert Dillworth,
a noted entertainment industry designer. From Alpha channels to
masking and layers, to color and special effects, students will
use acquired design skills to create compelling illustration for
logos, movie posters and CDs. Young artists will be introduced to
Abode Photoshop, the software used by leading industry professionals.

Funny Pictures: A Cartooning Workshop for Kids
Calling all kids fascinated with cartoon drawing.
This hands-on workshop will introduce you to secrets of drawing
cartoons. From creating cartoon strips, to super heroes, to caricaturing,
humor writing and more.
Step-by-step activities cover:
• Basic shapes, faces, expression
• Designing original characters
• Cartoons in motion: Walking to running
• Animal characters: From dogs to dinosaurs

Fine Arts for Kids: Introduction to Realistic Drawing
Do you show promise and aspire to become an artist? Do you enjoy
art at schools and can’t get enough? Artist, Eric Teitelbaum,
co-creator of the new “Pink Panther” comic strip, designed
this workshop for young enthusiasts as an outstanding opportunity
to learn the techniques of comic realistic drawing. Students will
gain the ability to draw with accuracy while developing important
observational skills necessary for any fine artist. Step-by-step
lessons incorporate charcoal, watercolor, pen/ink and graphite as
students are introduced to point-to-point drawing, realistic sketching
perspective, shading and composition and color. Class projects from
still life to collage will introduce young learners to artistic
techniques for making objects appear representational.
Who Should Attend
Kids from age 11-17 who are interested in gaining
hands-on experience with developing graphics for
videogames.

ADVANCED Computer Video Game
Design August 10-13
The Program
This is a four-day workshop camp, Monday through Thursday, August
10-13, 9:30am – 4pm, including both morning and afternoon
sessions.

What You Will Learn
This workshop will explore the advanced features of Adobe Flash
in creating levels of interactivity for
game development. Students will develop advanced skills in storyboarding,
project layout and character
design while using the special effects features of Flash for creating
interactive game motion graphics.
Activities will include
- Understanding importance of teamwork in all phases of game development
- Developing original game plots and storylines
- Designing original 2-D characters in support of storylines
- Designing original backgrounds and scenery for story illustration
- Building digital characters using advanced features in Flash
- Applying ActionScript, the programming language of Flash, to create
interactivity with your characters
- Adding sound and special effects

Cartoons In Motion: Introduction to Computer Animation
Did someone say JibJab??? If you've seen or received short animated clips off the internet and wondered how they are produced, then this is the summer class for you! In this 4-meeting information-packed, hands-on workshop, you will learn how to design and produce computer animated bits, complete with motion graphics,sound files, lip-syncing and mouth movement... perfect for publishing on the WWW.
Under the guidance of an experienced entertainment designer, students will soon create their own animations, with application for greeting cards, postcards, advertisements, animated shorts, or other creative projects where animation is a must! Class software features the acclaimed industry standard program, Adobe(R) Flash.
Activities include:
· Creating characters using Flash's vector drawing tools
· Characters in motion: Manipulating images on a screen
· Character Morphing- turning characters into other shapes
· Designing backgrounds and scenery: static and dynamic
· Making characters speak: mouth movement and lip-syncing using real sound files
· Effects: adding background music and sound
· Building animated clips for greeting cards, animated shorts and other projects
· Publish and email completed files on the World Wide Web.

Beginning Dance: The Ultimate Jazz and Hip-Hop Summer Boot Camp!
This weeklong, high-energy summer-camp presents a unique opportunity for the beginning dancer to learn the basics of jazz movement and hip-hop technique from a noted, touring dance professional. The emphasis is on introducing basic skills to the student new to studying dance. Each information-packed, skill-based session presents a fun way to learn beginning dance moves while building body awareness, self-esteem, and coordination through rhythmic exercise.
Monday through Friday, three-hour, music filled high energy sessions include:
· Warm-up techniques including isolations, stretching, and strengthening exercises
· "Across the floor" rhythm techniques, hip-hop basics and funky footwork.
· Jazz style movement featuring turns, leaps, rolls and jumps
Classes will end with a compelling choreographed combination that will leave students energized and on their way to becoming a better dancer.
Workshop dance attire:
Students should bring soft-sole dance shoes or tennis shoes and wear comfortable clothing.
About the Instructor:
Dance class curriculum and in-class lessons are under the direction of Rebecca Steinberg. Rebecca is a graduate of UCLA with a double degree in dance and psychology. While at UCLA she was a member and choreographer for the award-winning UCLA Dance Team and a recipient of the UCLA Alumni Fine Arts Scholarship as well as the Carol Burnett Musical Theater Award. She has performed with leading dance companies including the Broadway Musical North American Tours of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat and The Wedding Singer. She has also appeared on television and film as well as numerous dance productions. Rebecca now performs and teaches dance in the Southern California area.
