Certificate in
Early Childhood Education

A Program for preschool teachers and aides, parents and day care providers

THE PROGRAM

The program is designed to meet the California State Department of Social Services requirement for Teachers or Directors of preschool or day care programs. It will also help students meet a portion of the Children's Center Instructional and Supervision permit requirements outlined by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

All classes are offered on the CSUDH campus in Carson or at the Redondo Beach Community Center or Franklin Community Center in Redondo Beach.

The courses award upper-division, degree applicable academic credit. All of the program classes meet at the Redondo Beach Community Resource Center. Participants who complete the program receive a certificate in Teaching or in Administration. A baccalaureate degree is not required to participate in the program. In addition, participation in the certificate program is NOT necessary to take any courses listed.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  • PRESCHOOL TEACHERS
    Update knowledge of child development and curriculum, and receive child development units to comply with California State requirements
  • FAMILY DAYCARE PROVIDERS
    Learn new programming ideas for children in the home
  • TEACHERS OR AIDES of INFANTS, TODDLERS, OR PRESCHOOL CHILDREN
    Specialize in infant or child care program development and curriculum.
  • PROSPECTIVE DAY CARE TEACHERS
    Meet state teaching requirements
  • PERSONS WHO WANT TO BE ADMINISTRATORS
    Specialize in administration of infant and child care facilities. Meet partial State requirements for a supervisory permit.
  • PARENTS
    Discover child development skills and activities to help your child learn.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Students have the option of earning a Certificate in Teaching or Administration. A Certificate in Teaching is earned by completing 12 units: two core courses and two specialization courses (in either Infant or Preschool Program Development). A Certificate in Administration is earned by completing 15 units: three core courses and two specialization courses (in either Infant or Preschool Program Development).

COURSES
Developmental Psychology
PSX 350

Designed for the early childhood practitioner in infant care programs and preschool/child care programs. The course studies the cognitive, psychological and social development of the child (3 units).

Infant Program Development
TEX 351

Designed for the infant caregiver, teacher and administrator, this course focuses on the principles, guidelines, and processes for developing group programs for infants and toddlers
(3 units).

Preschool Program Development I
TEX 353

Examines a variety of early childhood curricula and the relationship of curriculum development to organization and instruction. Discussions include planning, development, and organizing the environment for effective teaching and learning (3 units)
Workshop in Teaching Methods
TEX 425

Study of various approaches, methods and materials related to a selected area of the curriculum. Development of applications at elementary and/or secondary level. Two to six hours of activity per week.

Child, Family and Community
TEX 355

Focus on developing an early childhood curriculum that incorporates home and community resources. Reviews premises and practices of parent involvement in early educational programs (3 units).

Early Childhood Administration
TEX 356

Designed for directors of preschool/day care programs and infant care centers, this course examines local and state regulations governing programs for young children. Program monitoring, fiscal management, personnel recruitment and selection, staff management, and program supervision are emphasized (3 units).
