Director of the Center for Service-Learning, internships and civic engagement
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director reports to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies and works with the Center for Service-Learning, Internships, and Civic Engagement staff, faculty and community advisory committees to design, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive program to support high quality service-learning, internships and civic engagement opportunities throughout the teaching and learning experience. The individual selected will have the opportunity to further develop and lead a successful, dynamic, and evolving program supported by continued funding from the Chancellor’s Office.
This is a 12-month faculty position subject to the appointment and compensation conditions described below. The University encourages and supports opportunities for the Director to be engaged in teaching and scholarship related to service-learning and civic engagement.
Among the responsibilities of the Director: · Provide leadership to the support of faculty, students and community partners engaged in service-learning, internships and civic engagement; · Provide a compelling vision for community-based learning and research, and communicate this vision to the campus and surrounding communities; · Initiate and maintain an on-going relationship with CSUDH’s colleges, and other appropriate units on campus, leading to a culture of civic engagement and greater campus participation in community-based learning, research and scholarship; · Work with community partners to develop long-term partnerships and connect community interests to faculty expertise and student learning in a broad range of disciplines; · Collaborate with Student Affairs to jointly present programs that promote student leadership in the areas of volunteerism, civic engagement and community change; · Serve as Principal Investigator on the Center’s grants and contracts; · Identify and pursue public and private sources of funding to support community-based learning and research, and the advancement of community-university partnerships as they relate to community-based learning; and · Coordinate with the CSU Center for Service-Learning, Internships, and Civic Engagement and other CSU service-learning offices to enhance regional and national visibility around civic engagement and community service-learning.
ABOUT THE CENTER FOR SERVICE-LEARNING, INTERNSHIPS AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: The Center for Service-Learning, Internships, and Civic Engagement is a support unit within Academic Affairs reporting to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. It actively promotes and supports the service-learning, internships and civic engagement efforts of the University, faculty, staff and students. ” The Center provides the University and community with a broad range of resources and support, including class and community presentations, training workshops, annual conferences, one on one assistance, mini grants, and a website and resource library. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have: · Exemplary record of teaching . · A desire to develop, implement and evaluate community-based teaching and research; · Some knowledge of community-based teaching and research; · Some familiarity with grant writing. · Demonstrated excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; · The ability to work collaboratively with academic deans, chairs, faculty, professional staff, community members, and students · An appreciation of and ability to work with a diverse student and community population. · Experience in supervising personnel, developing strategic plans, and managing budgets and resources is desirable, but not mandatory.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT/ COMPENSATION: The University seeks to fill this position by July 1, 2008, but is willing to negotiate the starting date as appropriate. This is a twelve month faculty position. Compensation for serving as Director shall include release time equivalent to twelve (12) units during the fall semester, and twelve (12) units during the spring semester. Compensation during the summer shall be the equivalent of 15% of the total compensation received during the fall and spring semesters.

A completed application will consist of: · A letter of interest in the position, including a statement that addresses the candidate’s qualifications vis-à-vis the position description; · A curriculum vita or resume that includes the names, titles, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least three colleagues who can provide assessments of the candidate’s professional experience, accomplishments and promise. Letters of reference submitted with the application will be welcome.
The position is open until filled. First consideration will be given to completed applications received no later than May 12, 2008. FUNDING: This position has become available as a result of an office restructuring and represents no additional funding from the Academic Affairs budget for the 2008-2009 academic year.
