TBE 540 - Programming Applications for Educators

Lesson 12 - Web Page Extras!

Software required: Netscape, sound editor, Screen Movie Recorder, QuickTime, RealMedia Player
Hardware required: Internet-connected computers, display device
Audience: TBE 540 students (graduate students, majority are teachers)

Prerequisites
: Learners must already be able to... (besides basic computer knowledge)
1.   Locate JavaScript samples and add to an existing web page.
2.   Customize JavaScript code at the intermediate level.
Objectives: After completing this lesson, the learner will be able to...
1.   Answer basic questions about copyright and "fair use."
2.   Locate sound and/or video files with a web search, download and add to a web page.

Lesson Description
:
1.   Students review classroom copyright rules at http://www.halldavidson.net/copyrightchart.html and take the copyright quiz at http://www.csus.edu/indiv/p/peachj/edte230/copyright/quiz.htm. Another quiz with answers is available at http://literacy.kent.edu/Oasis/Workshops/copyquiz.html. Other useful copyright-related sites are listed below.
2. Review syllabus, highlight requirements for HTML Project, review sample project.
3. Demonstrate web accessibility check using http://sipt07.si.ehu.es/evalaccess2/index.html and http://wave.webaim.org/
4. Review multimedia on the web at http://www.w3schools.com/media/default.asp. As you are looking around, try to find the answers to the Multimedia Scavenger Hunt. More details may be found in the links below:
5.   Demonstrate use of sound and video files in web pages (see moviesound.htm).
6.   Search for video files on the web using a search engine (may need to click on Video before searching) or go to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/) and use their search engine. Note - You will not be able to download YouTube videos, but you can include a direct link in a web page. Update - If you are looking for an educational video clip, try TeacherTube (http://www.teachertube.com/). You can search by topic.
7.   Search for audio file on the web using http://www.findsounds.com/ or a search engine.
8.   Make a simple page that uses a link to play an audio or video file that you have downloaded. Be sure to include a link to the source of the audio/video file as well
