Lesson 4 - Image Maps/Web Editor

Communicator (or other browser with editor)

Audience: TBE 540 students
(graduate students, majority are teachers)
Prerequisites: Learners
must already be able to... (besides basic computer knowledge)
1. Use a search engine to locate information.
2. Download graphics using Netscape or Internet Explorer.
3. Start an HTML document (from scratch).
4. Define GIF, JPG and "animated GIF".
5. Use simple graphics tools to create/manipulate graphics.
6. Demonstrate appropriate use of the following HTML tag categories: required
tags, images, lists, background graphics, colors, text sizes, links (graphics/text),
lines
Objectives:
After completing this lesson, the learner will be able to...
1. Create a simple animated GIF using GIFBuilder.
2. Create a GIF from the clipboard ("copied" graphic) using clip2gif.
3. Use Netscape Communicator/Composer as a web page editor
4. Create three linked web pages (topic=South America).
5. Create an image map for two or more links (using WebMap) and include
the map in a web page.
Lesson Description (time):

2. Review syllabus, remind about important dates. (5)
3. Handout distributed, lesson explained. (5)
4. Students will use a search engine to find all of the
following (to be saved in TBE 540 folder): map of South America (see SAMAPS.htm for sample maps), information about two
South American countries (e.g., population, area), one or more animated GIFs
appropriate for South American pages (e.g., waving flag). (20)
5. Review use of Netscape Communicator/Composer as a
web page editor (click to see Macintosh
or Windows
intructions). (15)
6. Create a page about one South American Country as
a group. Incorporate the materials located and saved in Step 4. The page
should include a graphic representative of the country (ideally, an animated
GIF), the name of the country (centered H1), one or more lines, a list containing
information about the country (population, area, languages, etc). (20)
7. Demonstrate (new) use of WebMap or similar program
to determine coordinates in an image map and necessary HTML code in web page
(using Communicator/Composer) See sample image map at imgmap.htm (30)
8. Ask students to create series of three web pages about South America ("index page" and two
others, see also SouthAmerica.htm). Leave on
screen for others to see. (30)
