How do I get started?

Before starting the PowerPoint program...

Be sure you have a place to save your work

Do some planning (outline of presentation)

Remember--PowerPoint is not appropriate for lots of text, outlines are
better

Gather some graphics (Internet, clip art collections, scanned pictures)
How do I get started?
Start the PowerPoint program

Windows 95/98/2000

Click the Start button
-
Move to Programs, then Microsoft Office (optional)

Click on Microsoft PowerPoint
-
Macintosh
-
Use Command F to find PowerPoint
-
Double click to start
How do I get started?
You should see a box like this one:
Click on Template, then OK.
How do I use a template?

Find the Templates (existing backgrounds and color schemes)

In the SBS labs, look on the U: drive

In your own computer, click on the words Presentation Designs
-
Choose a design you like.
How do I choose the layout?
You should see a box like this:
Click on your choice (first three are most common).
How do I put in text?
Your slide will look something like this
Just click and type!
What about these bulleted lists?

PowerPoint is really good at making bulleted lists
-
Press Enter or Return after each entry to get another bullet
-
Use Tab or Shift-Tab to indent or bring back to the margin
How do I insert graphics?
-
From the Insert menu...
-
choose Picture
-
choose Clip Art or From File
-
Clip Art comes with PowerPoint--click on the one you want
-
You can insert graphic files from many different sources, including the
Internet--find the file you want
How do I move/resize graphics?
-
A graphic will be inserted with ìhandlesî for moving and resizing
-
Drag on the ìhandlesî to resize
-
Drag on the center of the picture to move it
How can I make another slide?
-
Click on the Insert menu, then choose New Slide
-
Choose the layout as before
-
The background and color scheme will be the same for all slides
-
Insert text and graphics as before
I want to see my show!
To see a slide show...

Click on the View menu
-
Choose Slide Show
-
Click the mouse button to move forward from slide to slide or ...

Use the right and left arrow keys to move back and forth
-
Back to Slide View at end of show.
I want to make some changes!
In slide view...

Move around using the double arrows at right of screen

Edit text as in word processing (highlight with mouse, use keyboard or
menus to change)

Use the Tools menu to check spelling

Move or resize text boxes by clicking on the text and using the ìhandlesî
How about special effects?

Use the Slide Show menu to set up special effects (e.g., flying text, dissolving
cards)
-
Preset Animation (in the Slide Show menu) controls the movement of bulleted
text
-
Slide Transition in the Slide Show menu controls the effects from slide
to slide
I want flying text!
To add text animation...
-
Highlight the text with the mouse
-
Choose Preset Animation from the Slide Show menu

Choose from the list
-
Choose Animation Preview to try it out
I want dissolving slides!
To add slide transitions...

Move to the slide involved (the transition effect will happen when the
slide is opened in the slide show)

Choose Slide Transition from the Slide Show menu

Choose type and speed of transition
-
Choose Apply (only this slide) or Apply to All
I want to see the effects!

Choose Slide Show from the View menu to see the effects in action

You can change the effects in the Slide view
Iím not sure I like the colors!

The Format menu can be used to change the colors on a card or all cards

Choose Background to change the background colors
-
Choose Slide Color Scheme to change the colors of text, title, etc.

Choose Apply (one card) or Apply to All
What about the other views?

The View menu allows you to format the presentation as...

Individual slides to edit (Slide view)

An outline (Outline view)--handy to give to students
-
A view of all slides (small size) so you can change the order and/or delete
(Slide Sorter view)

A series of note pages--slide and annotations (Notes Page view)
What else can I do?
-
You can use the AutoContent Wizard to assist you in creating a presentation.
-
You can start with a blank presentation and put your own pictures in the
background.
-
You can import digitized audio and video.
-
You can create an outline in a word processing program and create slides
automatically from the outline.
Is there more?
-
You can choose Save as HTML from the File menu, and put your PowerPoint
on the web. Each slide will be made into a web page, with buttons for navigation.
-
The newer versions of PowerPoint have ìhyperlink buttonsî
which can move to slides other than the next one.
Can I use it off-campus?
-
PowerPoint Viewer is available free of charge for Mac and Windows 95/98
-
This program will ìplayî a PowerPoint presentation, but does
not editing
-
Both versions are available from Microsoft
