CANADIAN ENERGY RESOURCES
By Samantha Oliver
General Characteristics of Agricultural, Industrial, and Information Age Energy Resources
-
Agricultural Age Energy Sources:
Renewable energy sources: solar, wind, water, humans/slavery, animals, etc.
-
Industrial Age Energy Sources:
Non-renewable, fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, coal) and nuclear fission (uranium and plutonium fuels). These fuels pollute more, and once extracted from the earth, they are gone.
-
Information Age Energy Sources:
Eventual return (once fossil fuels are exhausted) to renewable energy sources (solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, ocean thermal, and biomass)--as in agricultural age, but using more sophisticated technologies to tap these energy sources; also nuclear fusion (from fusing of hydrogen atoms in water) once the technology is perfected in future; lag in transition to these alternative energy sources--perhaps into next age.
Information/Data on Canadian Energy Sources
Electricicty- net electricity generation in 1992 was 507,999,500 mwh, of which 476,450,300 mwh was to meet domestic demand. Of total, 62.2% was from hydro generation, 22.6% from thermal generation and 15.1 % from nuclear generation. Supply 115 volts; 60 Hz. Oil and Natural Gas- Production of marketable petroleum crude, 1992, 93,255,800 cu. meters; natural gas, 1992 116,663,500 cu. meters, and natural gas by-products 26,734,500 cu. meters. Canada's first off shore field, 250 km off Nova Scottia, began producing in June 1992. Minerals-Alberta accounted for 48.2% of the vaule of mineral products in 1992. Total vaule of minerals produced in 1992 (prelimary) was $35,411m. Principal minerals produced in 1992 (preliminary). Other resources are agriculture, fruit farming, forestry, tobacco, fur trade, fisheries.
Conclusions on Canada (Whether Primarily Agricultural, Industrial, or Information Age Re: Energy Sources)
