BRIEF HISTORY OF JAPAN
By Suzanne Tatikian
Key Events and Dates in Japanese History--From Founding of Country Up To Today
- How the Japanese came to Japan and where they came from remain shrouded in mystery. According to legend they are descended from Amaterasu Omikami, the bashful sun goddess who could only be enticed from her cave by the noise of a party staged for her benefit outside. This theory has been frowned upon since 1945 however. Reasearchers now feel that Japanese people were formed by waves of immigration from the Asian continent, spread over thousands of years.

Conclusions on Japanese History
Japan has been around for at least 18,000 years, That much can be proved by records and drawings, etc. However reasearchers estimate that Japan has been around for much longer. Japan's sea
s have helped to protect it from the outside world, however it has also served to isolate it as well. Japan has practiced a policy of isolationalism. It can be seen in its language which even today is not known by many exept the Japanese. Japan consists of a very homogeneous people. There are only 900,000 foreigners who live in Japan. Naturalization and immigration are not encouraged. IN the period of time since the U.S. accepted 1 million refuggees, and France received 160,000, Japan has only accepted 5000 refugees.
