JOYCE LEE HARPER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Mr. David Harper has established a $500 scholarship for nursing students in memory of his wife Joyce Lee Harper, who died from cancer. The Harper family wishes to acknowledge the significant and meaningful contribution hospice and oncology nurses made to the comfort and well-being of Joyce Harper during her illness and end of life.

Criteria for the HARPER Award

In recognition of a nurse whose career is dedicated to hospice or end-of-life care, the Joyce Lee Harper Memorial Award will be given to a nursing student who best meets the flowing criteria:

• GPA of 3.0 or better
• Current status as a student in good academic standing, making substantial progress in the CSUDH School of Nursing BSN or MSN program
• Current resume
• Significant experience working in the field of oncology nursing, hospice or end-of-life care
• Two letters of recommendation (one from faculty and one from employer)
• A narrative statement (about 250 words) describing:
  • Professional work experience in hospice, oncology or end-of-life care
  • Career goals
  • Significant academic achievements or objectives
  • Financial need
  • Other special information about the student

Process for Application

Students may apply for the scholarship award during the fall semester of any academic year. The School of Nursing’s Award and Scholarship Committee will consider all eligible applications, rank-order the applications according to the criteria, and recommend three candidates for the scholarship to the Director of the School of Nursing by February 1^st.  The Director will select the award recipient and notify the student, the Harper family, the University campus publications department and the Honors Convocation staff for inclusion in the Honors Convocation Program. The student will receive the scholarship at the annual Nursing Graduation Celebration held in May, for study in the following fall semester.

To apply, the student will submit the Scholarship Contact Sheet, one copy of her/his unofficial transcript, and other documents to demonstrate that she/he meets or exceeds the established criteria to:
