GWE EXAM
Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR)
All students must meet the upper division Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR). Every CSU campus offers the means for meeting this requirement, either through a test, the Graduate Writing Exam (GWE), or coursework, or a combination of both. Check the appropriate CSU Catalog for details.
BSN- Undergraduate students will have a hold on their record if this requirement is not addressed by the time they reach 84 units. Transfer students with more than 84 units must take GWE during their first semester.
MSN- Graduate Students will have a hold on their record if this requirement is not addressed before 9 units. All Transfers with more than 9 units and MSN Pathway students must take the GWE during their first semester.
**Students who have met the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) and have a GWE hold must complete the GWAR Petition for Fulfillment Form. Official Transcripts, Certification Letter or Test Results as requested on the form must be included. Send the Petition for GWE Exemption Form along with the certifying documentation to the School of Nursing via mail. The Petition for GWE Exemption Form will not be processed without the proper certifying documentation.
Meeting this requirement at California State University Dominguez Hills
There are 2 ways that students can meet this requirement at CSUDH.
1. Successfully pass English 350 (offered on campus only)
2. Successfully pass the Graduate Writing Exam (GWE)
*Students who fail to pass the GWE on their second try must enroll in a certifying course, such as ENG 350.
Students can take the GWE with the Testing Office or with a proctor of their choice.
Taking the GWE with a Proctor
Students are responsible for finding a suitable proctor. Relatives, friends and peers are not eligible. The following is a list of suitable proctors:
Librarian |
Counselor |
Testing Officer |
Military Education Officer |
Manager |
Clergyman |
Principal |
Supervisor |
Higher Education Faculty |
Other |
To take the GWE with a proctor, mail or fax the Examination Request/Proctor Agreement Form to the School of Nursing. GWAR holds will be removed the next business day upon receipt. The $35.00 Examination Fee is due at the time you take the exam with your proctor. Check or Money Orders only, no cash.
GWE Test Dates
Students are given a period of approximately four to five weeks to take the exam with their proctors.
