Assignments
Each assignment is due in the instructor's mailbox during the week indicated below. Count Week I as the first week that classes begin and Week XV as the week grades are turned in. Trimester dates are in your registration information.
All work will be graded and returned to you. Send us two copies of your assignments.
We keep one on file (please mark one copy as "For HUX Files"), and the third
will be mailed back to you with comments and a grade. Your papers should be
typed, double-spaced, with specific references to your assigned readings (for
example, McWilliams, p.20-25); they should also be date mailed. Be sure
to always include a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of your paper.
Footnotes or endnotes are desirable, although your references may be placed
in the body of the paper in parenthesis. Details on requirements for each assignment
can be found in the respective sections. Consult the Table of Contents for page
numbers.Be sure to keep a copy or a computer file of your paper in case it is
lost in transit.

ASSIGNMENT I - PHILOSOPHY SECTION
Write three (3) reading summaries (1-2 pages in length), critiquing the basic point based on the reading of each of the following:
SECTION:
- Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit Week, Due Week 3
- Marx's Man and Labor, Due Week 4
- Erich Fromm, Due Week 5
- Submit a 2-page typewritten essay on Part 3: ERICH FROMM AND ALIENATION, Question h (page 21 of syllabus): "Think about the person who is Black, Chicano, poor, etc...". How do the aspects of alienation which Fromm describes apply to such persons? Due Week 5
ASSIGNMENT II - CHICANO STUDIES SECTION
5) Write a 5-7 page typewritten paper on the Chicano by selecting either Points 1 or 2 (pg. 33 of the course syllabus).Due Week 7
6) Write a 5-7 page typewritten paper on Cultural Racism and the Chicano (pg. 33 of the course syllabus, Point 3). Due Week 10
ASSIGNMENT III - HISTORY SECTION
Keep a log of readings of the texts for this section of points that show evidence of alienation, estrangement, or subculture either in the content of the reading or in the author's point of view.
7) Submit at least two (2) pages of your log by the end of Week 12.
8) FINAL PAPER DUE MONDAY OF WEEK 15. A 10-12 page typewritten essay for the entire course. It should be a summary of the student’s personal assessment of self, presented either as a personal chronicle or a third person case study. In it you will indicate how you have experienced alienation or estrangement... (See pages 34 and 38 of this course syllabus.)
