COURSE OBJECTIVES
Course Objectives: This introductory graduate course provides
the opportunity for post-baccalaureate students to improve their cultural and
historical knowledge and to learn how the ideas of cultures and individuals
provide tools for the critical evaluation of the visual arts. Students will
gain further aesthetic and perceptual training, and will be introduced to a
variety of theories and methodologies for purposes of interpretation.
Expected Learning Outcomes: Students will become acquainted
with a variety of philosophical approaches to art which will assist them in
the understanding of both past and contemporary art. Students will complete
extensive readings and refine their skill in formal analysis, analytical thinking
and writing. Students will become familiar with various research strategies,
including the use of the internet to access scholarly peer-reviewed articles.
Means of Evaluation: Students will be assessed on the ability
to analyze a variety of academic research articles for content, as well as on
the basis of writing skill and use of proper academic form. Written assignments
will be further evaluated on the demonstration of the student’s understanding
of historical and contemporary art theories and methodologies used for interpretive
discourse.
