HUX 540 - EVOLUTION OF HUMAN CULTURE:
Western Civilization

COURSE ORGANIZATION

The course is divided into 3 sections of equal weight, each designed to occupy you for about 5 weeks. First, you will study the human culture of the classical Greek period, as exemplified in their ideas about cities. You will write a paper dealing with this section. Second, you will study the Renaissance, again referring to its urban manifestations. You will write a second paper at the end of this 4-week segment. Third, you will study some of the urban-related facets of modern culture - but this time you will not write a paper on this section alone. Instead, a "free" week has been allocated after segment three, for you to reflect on the entire course and write a paper synthesizing what you have learned from all the readings. You will find your assignments at the end of each course guide section.
