COURSE OBJECTIVES

To introduce the cultures of China and Japan through an interdisciplinary perspective that focuses on a few aspects of their rich creative heritage.

China will be studied first through readings in the philosophy of Taoism. Then the T'ang and Sung Dynasties (618-1179 A.D.) will be discussed as historical background for the impact of Taoist thought on landscape painting, nature poetry and Ch'in music.

Japan will be presented through a study of Zen Buddhism. The Kamakura and Ashikaga periods (1185-1568 A.D.) will provide the historical framework for understanding the influence of Zen on sumi-e painting, haiku poetry, and shakuhachi music.
