ASSIGNMENTS

Each assignment is due in the instructor's mailbox during the week indicated below. Count Week 1 as the first week that classes begin and Week 15 as the final week of the term. Trimester dates are listed at the upper left hand corner of your registration form.

All papers must be typed, with footnotes and bibliographies where appropriate, and mailed in before the assignment deadline. Your papers should be typed, double-spaced, with specific references to your assigned readings (for example, McWilliams, p.20-25); they should also be date mailed. Be sure to always include a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of your paper. Footnotes or endnotes are desirable, although your references may be placed in the body of the paper in parenthesis. Details on requirements for each assignment can be found in the respective sections.

If you do not fully understand the assignment or need help, telephone the instructor during office hours, or mail in your questions.

University regulations forbid assigning a grade of "I" (Incomplete) unless at least one course assignment has been received by the instructor. Instead, we must assign a "U" grade (Unauthorized Incomplete), which is equivalent to an "F."

ASSIGNMENT I: Philosophy Section
Write three (3) reading summaries (1-2 pages in length), critiquing the basic point based on the reading of each of the following:

3. Erich Fromm	Week 5

Submit a 2-page typewritten essay on Part 3: ERICH FROMM AND ALIENATION, Question 3.-h: "Think about the person who is Black, Chicano, poor, etc.... How do the aspects of alienation which Fromm describes apply to such persons?" Due Week 5

ASSIGNMENT II: Chicano Studies Section

Write a 5-7 page typewritten paper on the Chicano by selecting either Points 1 or 2. Due Week 7
Write a 5-7 page typewritten paper on "Cultural Racism and the Chicano" based on Point 3. Due Week 10

ASSIGNMENT III: History Section
Keep a log of readings of the texts for this section of points that show evidence of alienation, estrangement, or subculture either in the content of the reading or in the author's point of view.

Submit at least two (2) pages of your log by the end of Week 12.
FINAL PAPER DUE MONDAY OF WEEK 15. A 10-12 page typewritten essay for the entire course. It should be a summary of the student's personal assessment of self, presented either as a personal chronicle or a third person case study. In it you will indicate how you have experienced alienation or estrangement... (See History Section)
