ASSIGNMENTS

Each assignment is due in the instructor's mailbox during the week indicated below. Count Week 1 as the first week that classes begin and Week 15 as the final week of the term. Trimester dates are listed at the upper left hand corner of your registration form.

All papers must be typed, with footnotes and bibliographies where appropriate, and mailed in before the assignment deadline. Send in an extra copy, marked "For HUX Files," and keep a copy for yourself. Also, keep a copy of the title page of the paper returned by the instructor which contains your grade, comments, and date. Send a self-addressed, stamped (with adequate postage) envelope for the return of each assignment. If you do not fully understand the assignment or need help, telephone the instructor during office hours, or mail in your questions.

NOTE:

See Instructions for Sending in Assignments from the Humanities External Degree Online Catalog for specific details regarding approved methods of turning in assignments.

[E-mail] ASSIGNMENT I

Due:
Week 3
Length:
Not less than 5 pages
Format:
Outline the principal elements of the classical style as derived from the first one hundred and eleven pages of Charles Rosen’s book on the classical style. What musical elements contribute to this style? How are melody, rhythm, harmony, and form used to create this new method of musical expression?

[E-mail]ASSIGNMENT II

Due:
Week 7
Length:
5 Pages or more
Format:
Show how Beethoven used these classical elements in one of his early works from opus 1 to opus 21. If you are able to, you may also want to comment on untypical classical elements if there are any.

[E-mail]ASSIGNMENT III

Due:
Week 10
Length:
5 Pages or more
Format:
Discuss one of Beethoven’s works drawn from between opus 90 and opus 136 showing how the composer went beyond the classical period framework in forging his own unique style. You might also want to show what elements of musical classicism he retained, as certainly not every single note from this period shuns its musical ancestors.

[E-mail] ASSIGNMENT IV

Due:
Week 13
Length:
5 Pages or more
Format:
Review Sullivan’s book on Beethoven’s spiritual development, concentrating on what exactly is meant by that term and how it "develops."

Naturally, papers exceeding the recommended length will be encouraged and read. Some writers need more space to develop their thoughts than the minimum length suggested here.

Each of these papers are due at equal intervals throughout the course - that should provide adequate time for preparation and research. Please DO NOT send in all the papers at once at the end of the trimester; doing that does not allow for any teacher-student reaction, and if one gets off on the wrong track, there is no time to right the ship.

If, because of the demands of your life outside this course, you are unable to finish on time, there is no problem or stigma in taking an "Incomplete" (see the letter regarding Incomplete Grade Policy that came in your registration packet).
