Aside from your reading of this course syllabus, you are asked to read the assigned books in the order listed in the calendar below. You will have a choice of two plans for writing of papers (see below).
Each assignment is due in the instructors mailbox during the week indicated below. Count Week 1 as the first week that classes begin and Week 15 as the final week of the term. Trimester dates are listed at the upper right hand corner of your registration form.
All papers must be typed, with footnotes and bibliographies where appropriate, and mailed in before the assignment deadline. Send in an extra copy, marked "For HUX Files," and keep a copy for yourself. Also, keep a copy of the title page of the paper returned by the instructor which contains your grade, comments, and date. Send a self-addressed, stamped (with adequate postage) envelope for the return of each assignment. If you do not fully understand the assignment or need help, telephone the instructor during office hours, or mail in your questions.
No faxed or e-mailed assignments accepted!
WRITING ASSIGNMENT #1: The Works Of Ernest Hemingway
Please write a paper from 10-15 pages long dealing with all five of the Hemingway titles selected for this course. The paper should reach the instructor in Week 8 of the trimester.
In writing your paper you may choose to limit yourself to your own insights, reflections, and comments instead of consulting critical works on the literary works. You must be sure, however, to use internal evidence - evidence from within the literary work itself - to support your views. If you should decide to use critical or biographical materials from other books, be sure to give credit to your sources by documenting them in the conventional way.
Suggested Topics
- A Study of Hemingways Heroes from Nick Adams to Santiago
- From Innocence (Ignorance) to Experience (Knowledge): Education and Growth in these five Hemingway works
- The Hemingway Style (an analysis of Hemingways style, carefully supported by specific references to the text; include also a discussion of how and what the style contributes to the final meaning of each work as a whole)
- Hemingways Handling of Dialogue (an analysis of the characteristics of Hemingways dialogue, supported by specific references to the text; include also the functions served by the dialogue)
- Point, Counterpoint in Hemingway (the use of parallels and/or contrasts in Hemingways works, with specific and concrete references to the text. Be sure to do both of these: (1) point out the parallels and/or contrasts, and (2) tell how they function within the work)
Please note that in dealing with analyses of literary works, you must deal not only with what a work means but also how it achieves that meaning.
If you wish to propose a topic of your own, please consult the instructor for approval in advance.
WRITING ASSIGNMENT #2: The Works Of William Faulkner
Please write a paper from 10-15 pages long dealing with all five of the Faulkner titles selected for this course. The paper should reach the instructor in Week 15 of the trimester.
In writing your paper, you may choose to limit yourself to your own insights, reflections, and comments instead of consulting critical works on the literary works. You must be sure, however, to use internal evidence - evidence from within the literary work itself - to support your views. If you should decide to use critical or biographical materials from other books, be sure to give credit to your sources by documenting them in the conventional way.
