COURSE OBJECTIVES
The purposes of this course are the following:
- To acquaint students with the art of an important indigenous Mesoamerican culture.
- To help students understand the history, mythology, and symbolism of a different culture from their own.
- To have students explore aesthetic theories of Mayan art and architecture.
- To expose students to original documents, i.e. eyewitness accounts, of the 16th century.
BOOKS REQUIRED
- Friar Diego de Landa, Yucatan Before and After the Conquest, translated
by William Gates (New York: Dover Publications 1979). Approximate time needed
to complete reading: 2 weeks.
- Mary Ellen Miller, Maya Art and Architecture (New York: Thames
& Hudson, 1999). Approximate time needed to complete reading: 3 weeks.
- Mary Miller and Simon Martin, Courtly Art of the Ancient Maya (Thames
and Hudson, 2004, ISBN: 0-500-05129-1). Approximate time needed to complete
reading: 3 weeks.
- Joseph Gibaldi and Walter Achtert, MLA Handbook for Writers of Research
Papers (New York: Modern Language Association, 1988). Note: This book
is required for all HUX Courses.
