COURSE ORGANIZATION
The century of conquest following the death of Muhammad (632 A.D.) brought Arabs sharply to the attention of the world. The course divides their history into three periods. The first addresses the appearance and flowering of Arab-Islamic culture (7th-10th centuries A.D.). The second addresses the subsequent eclipse (11th-20th centuries). The third addresses the revival, and brings the story to the present.
Each period requires a paper addressing a question that has long interested historians, not just of the Arab world, but in general. Students who have completed HUX 501 will recognize the debt in developing these questions to Gustavson's A Preface to History.
