What’s New in Information Security

After over three years of development, thousands of hours of work across all 23 CSU sites, Human Resource and system union review, the CSU has finally developed a core set of Information Security Policies. These policies can be reviewed at http://www.calstate.edu/icsuam/sections/8000/. The next level of work now rests with campus implementation of these policies and the development of standards and guidelines, which will give much needed detail and specifics to the policies.
Campus Information Technology management has been active in developing local procedures and guidelines that best fit the campus security posture yet compliment the new policies. Additionally the campus has representation on both the CSU Information Security Advisory Committee, composed of campus information security officers (ISOs) and the CSU Information Technology Advisory Committee, composed of campus chief information officers (CIOs). Finally, the campus has been a key player in the creation and initial debut of the CSU Virtual Information Security Center (VISC), which is a collaboration of Dominguez Hills, Fullerton, Northridge, the Chancellor’s Office, Channel Islands, East Bay, Monterey Bay, and Bakersfield. The basic concept of this CSU Synergy project is to commit collaborating campus staffing and expertise in developing uniform security processes and techniques to solving security issues which are common across the campuses. Without the contribution of staff time and expertise from Dominguez Hills, Fullerton and Northridge, the VISC would not have become a reality.
Over the past year, the state of campus information security posture has been good. There are challenges ahead with emerging mobile and social media technologies, but the campus is well positioned, through the collaborative nature of campus management, staff. and faculty to mitigate these security threats.
