POP your toroMail
ToroMail provides you with the option of checking your mail using Post Office Protocol (POP3), a simple set of instructions that lets your computer retrieve messages from the toroMail server into another mail client such as Gmail or Outlook. After authenticating your request via your username and password, the POP protocol asks the toroMail server if there is any new mail; if your mailbox on the toroMail server has new messages, then POP downloads them to the mail client/server you specify. Use these settings when configuring your mail client:
- Username: [your toroMail username, e.g., aschwarzenegger2]
- Password: [your toroMail password, e.g., I8icecream]
- POP server name: mirapoint.csudh.edu
- SMTP server name: mirapoint.csudh.edu
- Server port: 110
- Supports SSL: no
More about POP service
Normally with POP service, messages are downloaded to your desktop computer and then deleted from the toroMail server. CSUDH Information Technology highly recommends that you choose this option—to delete mail from the toroMail server--if it is offered to you. If you choose a POP option "keep mail on server", your toroMail box (limited to 20 MB) can grow large and unwieldy—and too full to accept new messages--and e-mail operations can become inefficient and time-consuming.
About the Retrieving Mail Client
When mail is fetched from toroMail into Gmail, it’s a server to server transfer—your mail would be transferred to the Gmail server and deleted from the toroMail server. After the transfer, the mail is occupying space on a Gmail server and is available wherever you have access to the Internet and Gmail.
When mail is transferred from toroMail to Outlook, it’s a server to desktop computer transfer. Things to think about when transferring mail to Outlook are the following:
- POP was designed for, and works best in, the situation where you use only a single desktop computer. If you choose to work with your POP mail on more than one machine, you may have trouble with e-mail messages getting downloaded onto one machine, when you need to work with them on another machine; for example, you may need a message at work that was downloaded to your machine at home.
- Your archive of mail, if you have one, is kept on your desktop computer; you would generally need little storage space on the toroMail server.
