1997-1998 "BATS" Funding Report for
CSU Dominguez Hills

September 1, 1998

A number of the instructional computing project plans described in the Baseline Access Plan, dated January 1997, were implemented during the 1997-98 academic year. Of particular note was the upgrade acquired for the primary campus e-mail server and improvements made in several student computer labs, as well as the creation of a new lab facility. The projects occurred as outlined below.

1997-1998 Dominguez Hills Projects

Category: Hardware access - Creating a Contemporary Communications Writing and Research Laboratory

The Communications department is currently serving approximately 600 students, yet their department's computer training facilities consisted of twenty ten-year-old Macintosh computers that were not capable of accommodating the newer graphics software. Their students were competing for employment with computer and research skills that were almost a decade behind the contemporary workplace.

This Academic Affairs project will completely revamp the existing facilities with twenty-five Macintosh G3 desktop computers, containing sufficient memory to smoothly run all word processing and graphics applications. Current versions of software will be acquired, along with color laser printers and the lab will also have Internet connectivity.
Cost = 82,000

Category: Hardware access - Faculty Personal Computer Lease

This Academic Affairs initiative funded the acquisition of forty-five Pentium PC's and eighteen Macintosh desktop computers on an annual lease basis for use by faculty in the schools and college. This is a multi-year project and follows upon a similar lease process that was initiated during the previous academic year. This process will provide desktop machines for those faculty who previously had no access to a device, as well as provide a refresh for existing 386 or older machines.
Cost = 32,000

Category: Hardware Access - Student Computer Lab Equipment and Environment

SBS E104 Upgrade:
The obsolete DOS-based 386 workstations in this lab were replaced with Pentium PC's running Windows NT workstation. The computers were acquired through a lease/purchase arrangement. A Cisco switch/router was also purchased, along with printer and network server upgrades. In addition, electrical work was required to properly install the new PC's and a page scanner was added to the equipment for student use in the lab.
Cost = 30,708

Category: Hardware Access - Student Computer Lab Equipment and Environment

SCC E127 North Upgrade:
The ten-year-old dual floppy Macintosh SE's were replaced with Pentium PC's running Windows NT workstation. This lab had almost ceased to be useful to students because of the age of the equipment that was available for their use. Ergonomic chairs were also purchased, along with a Cisco switch/router and a Windows NT server. Equipment for this lab was acquired through a lease/purchase arrangement.
Cost = 33,341

Category: Hardware Access - Student Computer Lab Equipment and Environment

SCC E127 South Upgrade:
The twenty-five Macintosh LCs in this lab were replaced with Power Macintosh G3 266Mhz systems. They were installed with security lockdown kits and anti-virus software. Additional software, such as Office98 and Illustrator version 7.0 was also acquired for use in this lab, as well as a new page scanner.
Cost = 61,348

Category: Software access - Banner Web Software Acquisition

The Dominguez Hills Banner management group, a campus committee charged with recommending system improvements, requested that the student information system be modified to provide an easier interface for students to access their personal data. In order to make this graphical processing a reality; it was necessary to purchase the Banner Web Interface software.

This software allows a student world-wide-web access to: view the University catalog, view an up-to-date class schedule, view their financial aid information and status, apply for admission and verify the status of their application, as well as register for classes and view their schedule.

Service to students was improved, as they can now view and update their demographic data, view holds, display their grades, view their academic transcript, and also verify the status of their account summary information.
Cost = 69,300

Category: Software Access - Campus Wide E-Mail System

An additional processor and a 128 MB memory module were added to the Digital Alpha 2100 instructional timesharing system that is used for student and faculty email services. There are currently approximately 9,000 active mail accounts on this device.
Cost = 9,526

Category: Service improvement - Display of Student Information

Admissions and Records had no facility to display constantly changing student information, eye-catching displays, and detailed instructions for student service requests. This information should be displayed in a central location, which is easily viewable and in close proximity to the office that provides the service.

This request from the Student Affairs division was for the initial technology equipment components to provide information to students. It will replace the antiquated method of displaying critical dates and deadlines by posting signs and posters inside the lobby of their offices, and also create a focal point for displaying new procedures and instructions. Admissions and Records will use computer technology to create, store and update signs and instructions, which can then be easily retrieved and displayed on monitors for student information purposes.
Cost = 1,100

Total of Dominguez Hills projects = 319,323
