The university has approved a new Mathematics Option for the math major. The Math Option is intended for students who plan to study math in graduate school or use math professionally in business, industry, or government. It replaces the old General and Professional options in the major.
A revised Mathematics Education Option has also been approved. It is intended for students who plan to teach math in high school or middle school. The revisions are designed to meet the new California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Standards for Subject Matter Preparation for high school math teachers.
We have also updated the Mathematics Minor.
These new programs will be offered starting in fall semester 2004. Students who are currently enrolled in one of the old options of the math major or in the old version of the minor have catalog rights and may continue to follow the old programs if they wish. For information about the old programs see the university catalog.
All CSUDH students must take a series of General Education courses, satisfy the Statutory Requirements, and satisfy the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement. For information about these things please contact the University Advisement Center http://www.csudh.edu/uac/
Important: Math Majors should take PHY 130, not PHY 100 to satisfy the Natural Science requirement, and they should take MAT 191 not MAT 105 to satisfy the Quantitative reasoning requirement, in the General Education requirements, Area B.
