Policies Students are expected to attend all sessions of the course, read the text, do and check all assigned problems, and complete all work for which points are assigned. Schedule dates are approximate. Quizzes will cover sections most recently done in class. There are no makeup quizzes. Homework is due the session after a section is discussed in class. Homework to be turned in will be accepted if it is late, but it is to the student’s advantage to keep up with class work and turn them in promptly. Solutions that have errors or are incomplete will be returned with instructions for correction. Homework will receive credit when it is completely corrected. Projects that are late will have reduced credit. Tests will be given on the dates scheduled, and will cover the sections that have been discussed in class or assigned. There are no makeup tests. Students may miss one test in an emergency. There may be a bonus given to students who have completed all tests. All students must take the final.
Study Time It is expected that you will spend at least twice the in class hours studying for this class outside of class, that is, at least 6 hours a week. Make sure that you have planned sufficient study time in your weekly schedule for this and your other classes.
Academic
Integrity
(Part from Math Department sample syllabus) The student is expected to complete
the work for this course independently. Cooperation on homework is encouraged,
with the understanding that each student must individually master the material
of the class. The mathematics department does not tolerate cheating. Students
who have questions or concerns about academic integrity should ask their
professors or the counselors in the Student Development Office, or refer to the
University Catalog for more information. (Look in the index under “academic
integrity”.) In accordance with these policies the instructor acknowledges that
the material and examples for this course are taken or adapted from the course
text or other similar books.
Disabled
Student Services Cal State Dominguez Hills adheres to all applicable laws, regulations,
and guidelines with respect to providing reasonable accommodations for students
with temporary and permanent disabilities. If you have a disability that may
adversely affect your work in this class, I encourage you to register with
Disabled Student Services (DSS in WH B250) and to talk with me about how I can
best help you. All disclosures of disabilities will be kept strictly
confidential.
Furlough
Days
Because of the budget crisis, I will not teach or have office hours on three
days during the term, and the class will not meet on those days. You will need
to study and master the material for those days independently and do the
homework. (Because you need to learn to be an independent learner, this may not
be such a bad thing.) Skim and then read the book chapter and do the homework.
Be sure at the beginning of the term that you find some other students to work
with, so you can review this material together. Do not miss other days of class
so you are ready for the material you must learn on your own. Furlough days
will be Th Oct 8, Th Oct 16 and Tu Nov 24.
