003 Algebra Review (3 unit)
Objectives
After completing MAT 003 the student should be able to
- Perform arithmetic with
signed numbers and fractions.
- Translate sentences into
equations with variables.
- Use the distributive law to
transform expressions.
- Solve simple linear equations
and inequalities.
- Model realistic problems with
simple linear equations.
- Graph linear equations and
inequalities.
- Calculate slopes of lines and
understand what they mean.
- Find an equation for the line
given two points on the line, or one point and a slope.
- Write the equation in a form
that is appropriate to the problem.
- Graph two-variable
inequalities in the plane.
- Add, subtract, multiply, and
divide polynomials
- Understand and use scientific
notation in calculations and word problems.
- Use and understand integer
exponents (including negative exponents).
- Add, subtract, multiply and
divide simple rational expressions.
- Solve problems including word
problems using rational expressions.
- Factor by grouping or
patterns and factor trinomials
- Solve simple problems
involving radicals.
- Solve formulas with rational
expressions
Expected outcomes
Students must be able to demonstrate through written assignments, exams, and
discussions, that they have achieved the objectives of MAT 003.
Method of Evaluating Outcomes
Evaluations are based on homework, class participation, quizzes, and
scheduled examinations covering students' understanding of the topics covered
in MAT 003. MAT 003 is a CR/NC class.
